Captains Open New Year Thursday Afternoon at Washington College (MD)

CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Christopher Newport begins a two-game road swing on Thursday, opening 2020 with a non-conference game at Washington College of Maryland. Tip off time is set for 4:00 p.m. at Cain Athletic Center in Chestertown.

John Krikorian's squad is 9-4 on the season and coming off back-to-back decisive victories last weekend to win the Holiday Inn/Captains Shootout at the Freeman Center. The Captains defeated Bethany (96-52) on Saturday and Wesley (97-78) Sunday to take the title. Junior Jason Aigner was named MVP of the tourney after leading the Captains with 21 points in the Championship game. All of Aigner's points Sunday came on seven three-pointers, six in the opening half. Senior Nick Parks was also named to the All-Tournament squad as the Captains completed the 2019 portion of their schedule.

The lopsided triumphs were the top two offensive performances of the season for the Captains, who were able to play all 15 student-athletes available. 13 of the 15 got into the scoring column in Sunday's victory.

Washington College, a member of the Centennial Conference, is 3-7 on the season and the Shoremen have lost five of their last six games. Washington has not played since December 18th, when the Shoremen lost at Ursinus by an 84-73 score. Christopher Newport and Washington College will be meeting for the sixth time, and the Captains hold a 4-1 lead in the all-time series. The schools have not met since the 2003-2004 season, and the Captains have won the last four games in the series.

Following Thursday's tilt, the Captains will conclude their non-conference schedule on Saturday, playing at Widener University in Chester, Pa. The matinee is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m.

Christopher Newport opens play in the Capital Athletic Conference on Friday, January 10th, hosting York College (PA) at the Freeman Center in a 5:30 p.m. start.

All Christopher Newport games are broadcast live on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM) with the pre-game show beginning at 3:40 Thursday. The game will also be streamed live on CNUsports.com/watch with live stats also available.
