INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Following one of the finest offensive seasons in the history of NCAA Division III baseball, the Christopher Newport baseball team was honored with six statistical champion plaques provided to the team and three individuals. The Captains tied for the third most in Division III and was one of only ten programs in the entirety of the NCAA to earn at least six plaques in 2018-19.
Led by head coach
John Harvell in his 19th season, the Christopher Newport baseball team led the nation in six of the 18 offensive statistical categories, including leading the nation in scoring with 11.7 runs per game. Three team plaques were sent to Newport News as the Captains led the team in runs per game, slugging percentage (.554), and home runs per game (1.67). Three individuals were also honored as seniors
Seth Woodard (walks per game - 1.31),
Nicholas Baham (home runs - 19), and
Ryan Grubbs (on-base percentage - .607) hauled in the individual accolades.
The Captains led a group of only four teams in the NCAA, Divisions I, II, or III, to average over 10 runs per game this season while setting a new program record and marking the most in a Division III season since 2010 when Johns Hopkins scored 554 runs in 51 games. The Captains' 11.7 runs per game ranks fifth all-time in NCAA Division III history and is the highest recorded total since 2000 when Wisconsin Oshkosh set the division record with 12.7 runs per game.
Baham blasted a program and conference record 19 home runs during his final campaign. That number was also good enough to lead the nation in home runs, becoming the first player in program history to lead Division III in long balls for a season. Grubbs set a new program mark with a .607 on-base percentage, posting just the sixth OBP over .600 in 12 seasons at Division III since the NCAA started tracking the statistic. Woodard also shattered the single season record for walks at Christopher Newport with 59 while also moving up to second all-time in career free passes despite just playing two seasons for the Captains.
