Christopher Newport Closes Non-Conference Schedule With Saturday Evening Tilt Against Washington & Lee

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The non-conference portion of the 2019 men's soccer schedule will come to a close on Saturday night as the Christopher Newport Captains (3-1-2) take on sixth-ranked Washington & Lee University. The Generals are off to a 5-1-0 start and will kickoff against Christopher Newport at Captains Field at 6:00 pm.

Christopher Newport is coming off a scoreless draw with another Old Dominion Athletic Conference opponent as they faced the University of Lynchburg on Wednesday night. The matchup with Washington & Lee is just the sixth all-time between the two in-state foes, with the Generals taking a slight 3-2-0 edge in the series last season with a 2-1 overtime victory.

For fans who can not attend the game live, a video webcast and live stats will be available at CNUsports.com. Links can be found on the men's soccer schedule page.

So far this season, the Christopher Newport defense has led the way wtih just six goals allowed through the first six games for a 0.91 goals-against average. Senior Justin Piercy has started all six games and has played all but 21 minutes between the pipes for the Captains with 21 saves. He has a .778 save percentage and boasts a 0.94 GAA heading into Saturday's contest.

The strong back line in front of him features four veteran starters with seniors Derek Cook, Khari Jones, and juniors Daniel Hulett and Davis Pillow. Cook is also the team's  leading offensive weapon so far, scoring three goals with two assists through the first six games. Sophomore forwards Will Collins and Lincoln Kickbush have each added two goals apiece for the Captains offense.

Washington & Lee comes into the Saturday evening tilt after vaulting up eight spots in the most recent United Soccer Coaches Top 25. The Generals have already played three games against nationally-ranked competition and have gone 2-1-0 against that group. Freshman midfielder Michael Kutsanzira notched a hat trick in the Generals' last game and now leads the team in scoring with 9 points on four goals and one assist. Juniors Jack Parham and Harry Pinkerton have each added a pair of goals and one assist for five points so far this season.

Following Saturday's matchup with W&L, the Captains will shift focus to the Capital Athletic Conference starting on Saturday, September 28 with a home game against York (Pa.) at 7:00 pm. That game kicks off the double round-robin format started in 2019 in which Christopher Newport will face every league opponent twice in the regular season.
