NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Christopher Newport football team will be finishing up its non-conference schedule on Saturday when the Captains travel to North Carolina to take on Brevard College. Kickoff time is set for 7:00 p.m. at Brevard Memorial Stadium in Brevard, N.C. It will be the first meeting ever of the schools.
Art Link's squad is 0-2 after falling at home to Hampden-Sydney in overtime last Saturday night, 27-24. The Captains opened the season with a 43-13 loss to fifth-ranked North Central.
"This is obviously a big game for us," Link said. "We need a win and have been working hard all week to prepare. This is our first trip of the season and Brevard is a rapidly improving program. We're going to have to limit our mistakes and play well."
The Captains trailed for most of the night last Saturday,  and never took the lead until overtime in their Family Weekend battle against Hampden-Sydney at TowneBank Stadium. Senior kicker
Dylan Curran's 40-yard field goal to open overtime briefly gave Christopher Newport its first advantage, 24-21, but the Tigers responded by reaching the end zone in their possession to pull out the 27-24 victory.
Brevard has no record heading into the game, as the Tornados season-opener last Saturday vs. Apprentice ended in the third quarter due to bad weather conditions. The game initially delayed and then was canceled and will not be resumed or re-scheduled. The Tornados were 4-6 last year and are a member of the USA South Athletic Conference, Christopher Newport's former conference. Brevard resurrected its football program in 2005.
Christopher Newport has had tremendous success against schools from North Carolina over the years. The Captains are 37-7 all-time for a winning percentage of .841. Christopher Newport is 14-0 against Greensboro, 10-4 vs. Methodist, 8-3 vs. North Carolina Wesleyan, and 5-0 against Chowan.
The Captains intercepted four Hampden-Sydney passes in last week's loss, including two from senior pre-season All-America selection
Damian Jiggetts, who now has nine for his career. Jiggetts is just two shy of the school's all-time career record for interceptions set by Cameron Barlow in 2015. Junior
Jake Herzog and freshman
Deiontae Curry also registered picks last week for the Captains.
Saturday's action will be broadcast live on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM) with the pre-game show beginning at 6:30 p.m.Â
Following Saturday night's game, the Captains have next weekend off before opening up play in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. Christopher Newport travels to Union, New Jersey, to take on Kean University on Saturday, October 5th, at 12:00 p.m. to begin the stretch of seven straight conference tilts.
