NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport hosts Hampden-Sydney Saturday night at TowneBank Stadium, and the Captains and Tigers will both be looking for their first wins of the new football season. Kickoff time is set for 7:00 p.m. It's Family Weekend at Christopher Newport, and the game is sold out. Standing room only tickets will go on sale at 5:00 p.m. Saturday at TowneBank Stadium. Gates open at 6:00 p.m. for the 7:00 p.m. battle.Â
The Captains are coming off a 43-13 defeat last Saturday afternoon to fifth-ranked North Central College. Hampden-Sydney was on the losing end of a 28-16 final score last Saturday to Averett. It will be the eighth meeting of the schools all-time, and the Captains now hold a 4-3 lead in the series after winning the last three encounters. Last September 8th at Hampden-Sydney, Christopher Newport recorded a 17-13 triumph.
"We learned a lot about our team last week and obviously were not happy with the result," Head Coach
Art Link said. "We've had a solid week of practice and are looking forward to Saturday's challenge. Hampden-Sydney is a good program and I know they'll be fired up. The atmosphere at TowneBank Stadium should be something special."
Both squads feature senior quarterbacks who posted solid numbers last week.
Jack Anderson completed 17 of 27 pass attempts for 202 yards and a touchdown for the Captains, while Clay Vick made his first career start and connected on 32 of 53 throws for 360 yards and a score. The Tigers are coming off a 4-5 record last year, and were picked to finish third in the pre-season poll of Old Dominion Athletic Conference coaches. This is the 125th season of football at H-SC.
Anderson had a big game vs. the Tigers last season, and tossed two touchdown passes to propel the Captains to victory. He was 27 of 37 for 275 yards and his third quarter connection with
Garrison Mayo proved to be the difference. Anderson and Mayo also hooked up last week on a 78-yard scoring play, the fifth-longest pass play in Christopher Newport history. Mayo will likely miss the next few weeks due to an ankle injury suffered in last week's game vs. North Central.
Christopher Newport kicker
Dylan Curran got off to a fast start last week by kicking field goals of 41 and 48 yards. Curran is now 11 for 11 on field goal attempts in his career as a Captain.
Saturday's game will be broadcast live on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM) with the pre-game show beginning at 6:30 p.m. The action will also be streamed live on cnusports.com/watch with live video and stats.
