Six Captains Collect All-Conference Men's Lacrosse Honors; Scott McAneney Earns First-Team Nods

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Six members of the Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team secured All-Conference accolades, including first-team honors for Scott McAneney, as the Captains were well-represented on the All-League squad, which was announced by the Capital Athletic Conference on Monday afternoon.

Headlining the decorated contingent, McAneney joined former legends Randy Foster and Tony Cruz as the only juniors in program history to earn first-team nods. Meanwhile, Brady Altobello, Drew Cornell, Dylan Rice, Will Stockhausen, and Max Wayne secured second-team honors for their efforts during the 2019 campaign.

Overall, the six All-Conference honorees equaled the most in program history, matching the haul by the 2018 squad. Meanwhile, Altobello became just the third freshman in school history to earn All-League plaudits, joining Rice and Wayne, who were celebrated last year.

Putting together arguably the greatest season by a goalie in program history, McAneney was tremendous between the pipes. The third-year star established a new program record with a .580 save percentage, which also marked the finest effort by any goalie in the CAC since 2016. Clamping down on opposing attacks throughout the year, the Paoli, Pennsylvania native also established a new school standard with 243 total saves, including a pair of 19-stop showcases against Southern Virginia on March 23 and Mary Washington on April 6. Those performances equaled the third-highest single-game total ever registered by a Captain.

Making a seamless transition to college, Altobello stepped right in and played a crucial role for the Captains throughout the 2019 campaign. One of just two freshmen to earn All-Conference accolades this season, he was a lethal threat as an offensive midfielder. During the year, he posted 47 points, which equaled the 10th-highest single-season total in program history and the second-most recorded by a first-year competitor. Consistently effective, the Potomac, Maryland native contributed at least one point in 17 games, including back-to-back five-point eruptions against Colorado College on February 15 and Hampden-Sydney on February 23.

While Altobello was penning the opening chapter to his career, Cornell was putting the finishing touches on one of the finest tenures in school history. During the year, the senior defenseman caused 46 turnovers, which ranked third in the CAC and marked the fourth-highest single-season total in program history. His finest outing came on March 19 when he registered eight caused turnovers against Virginia Wesleyan, equaling the single-game program record. The Richmond native eventually established a new school standard with 102 career caused turnovers while also setting a new record with 73 appearances during his time at CNU.

Continuing to bolster his reputation as one of the most lethal offensive contributors in the country, Rice deposited 52 goals during his sophomore campaign, which marked the third-highest total in program history. Torching opposing defenses throughout the year, he compiled 17 multi-goal efforts, breaking his own single-season school record set in 2018. Among his finest moments, he had 13 hat-tricks, including a run of eight straight from February 27 through March 23. The Mechanicsville, Virginia native also matched his career-high with four assists against Catholic on March 15 and finished the season ranked among the top-10 in the CAC with 70 total points.

Helping anchor the midfield unit, Stockhausen picked up his first All-Conference honor after piecing together a breakout sophomore season. Flashing a well-rounded offensive arsenal, he finished the year with 23 goals and 20 assists. With that performance, the Mechanicsville, Virginia native became just the seventh Captain - and only the third midfielder - to compile a 20/20 campaign. Effective throughout the season, he was the team's lone player to record a point in all 19 contests and currently boasts at least one tally in 25 straight games dating back to last year, which stands as the longest run in program history.

Locking down opposing attacks throughout the season, Wayne remained a key cog on Christopher Newport's suffocating defensive unit. During his second year with the Captains, he forced 51 turnovers, which ranked second in the CAC and marked the third-highest single-season total in school history. He forced at least three miscues in 11 of his appearances, including a career-high seven against Virginia Wesleyan on March 19. That tied the third-highest single-game total by a Captain. The Ashburn, Virginia native also collected 52 ground balls during the year and had two or more in 13 of his 19 appearances.

Aided by the efforts of the program's All-Conference honorees, Christopher Newport finished the year with a 12-7 record while advancing to the semifinals of the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament. The squad was also a mainstay in the USILA National Coaches Poll and climbed as high as 13th in the rankings.
