CNU Senior Shortstop Nick DiNapoli Named ABCA Second Team All-American

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- After hauling in South Region Player of the Year honors from the American Baseball Coaches Association earlier in the week, Christopher Newport senior shortstop Nick DiNapoli (Beacon, N.Y.) capped his season with a second team All-American pick by the coaches' association on Friday.

DiNapoli joins Joseph Cutchins and Seth Woodard as 2019 All-Americans for CNU baseball, as the latter pair was tabbed D3baseball.com All-American selections earlier in the month. The shortstop picked up his first career All-American designation and became the 18th different player in program history to haul in the postseason accolades.

Joining Trae Bailey and Billy Steel as the only shortstops to earn All-American honors in CNU baseball history, DiNapoli earned the recognition after hitting in the three hole of one of the nation's most elite offenses in 2019. While helping churn out a record-breaking number of runs as a team, DiNapoli finished the season hitting .374 while slugging .676 and reaching base at a .457 clip. He ranked eighth nationally in home runs, 14th in runs scored, and 18th in RBI while hitting in the middle of the Captains lineup that ranked number one in the NCAA in runs scored per game.

The Beacon, N.Y. native transferred to Christopher Newport prior to his sophomore season and was a member of the Captains for three years. After an impressive tenure at shortstop over the last two years, DiNapoli wrapped his career ranking sixth all-time in career batting average with a .364 mark and fifth in career slugging percentage with a .609 mark. He concluded his career starting 82 games in 90 played with 119 hits, including 43 for extra bases. He smashed 16 home runs and drove in 84 runs while scoring 87 times.

This season, DiNapoli secured All-American hoonors by starting 43 games at shortstop and driving in 53 runs with 57 runs scored. He had 67 hits in 179 at-bats with 13 home runs and 11 doubles. He added a perfect 11-for-11 on the basepaths for only the sixth perfect stolen base percentage among players with at least 10 steals in a season at CNU.

During the postseason, DiNapoli went on a tear, driving in 17 runs and scoring 11 times with 6 home runs over the final eight games of the season. He closed the season having reached base in 27 straight games, marking the second longest streak of the season for a CNU player.

DiNapoli was named to the D3baseball.com National Team of the Week in late April after hitting .500 (7-for-14) with 2 HR and 2 doubles in a 3-1 week for the Captains. The Captains' starting shortstop was named first team All-Conference and also earned first team All-Region honors by both D3baseball.com and the ABCA.

The Captains went 35-10 this season and returned to the NCAA Tournament for the 10th time in program history and second straight season. With DiNapoli helping lead the way, CNU won the program's first Capital Athletic Conference Championship and hosted an NCAA Regional for the second time.
