PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- With a marathon three-set victory on Sunday afternoon, freshman
Reagan Delp kept her team-best winning streak alive against 10th-ranked Carnegie Mellon, capturing her seventh straight win in singles play. The 24th-ranked Captains (9-6) suffered an 8-1 loss in the match on the road, as the host Tartans improved to 13-6 on the season.
Delp was the bright spot for CNU as the freshman kept up her winning ways. Taking on Alex Iordache in No. 5 singles, Delp picked up a tight win in the first set, 7-6 (3), and dropped the second, 6-0. Headed to the third set breaker, Delp outlasted her opponent for a 10-5 win. The Roanoke, Va. native has won every match since returning from the California spring break trip, going 3-0 at No. 3 and 3-0 at No. 5.
With three players ranked nationally in the first singles rankings of the year and the second-ranked doubles tandem, the Tartans pulled away despite a tough battle from Christopher Newport. In doubles play, the Captains top duo of
Johanna Ranta-aho and
Olivia Reed won five games before falling 8-5 to the No. 2-ranked pairing in the nation, Melissa Strome and Danna Taylor. CNU also suffered an 8-5 loss at No. 2 doubles, where Vinaya Rao and Courtney Ollis downed CNU's
Colette Gilbert and
Amanda Yermal.
In singles play, sixth-ranked Danna Taylor won the top-20 matchup on the top line with Christopher Newport's Ranta-aho (6-2, 6-0). At No. 2 singles, 22nd-ranked Jamie Vizelman defeated
Kara Ferner (6-1, 6-2); Reed suffered a 6-1, 6-2 loss at No. 3 to Rao.
The Captains will travel to face No. 23 Johns Hopkins on Saturday, April 13 at 4:00 pm for their next match.
