NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Christopher Newport senior
William Trang picked up a three-set victory against a Division I opponent on Sunday afternoon but the Captains fell as a team at George Mason University, 6-1. The Captains fall to 9-7 overall while the Patriots are now 8-9.
Trang earned his win against Ryan Charles at No. 4 singles. Charles won the first set 6-2, but Trang rallied for a 6-3 win in the second set to force a tiebreaker. In the third set, the CNU senior earned a 7-5 win to capture the Captains' lone point of the day.
CNU also picked up a doubles victory at No. 3 doubles where
James Baron and
Dominic Lacombe defeated Amir Alkhafaji and Michael Pollatos, 7-6. The win would not count in the team score, as the match was played under the seven-point format in which the three doubles matches are worth just one team point. George Mason won two of three with wins at Nos. 1 and 2.
In the other singles matches, Trang is not the only Captain who played well against the Division I competition. CNU captured multiple games in all but one match, and the bout at No. 6 also went to a third set tiebreaker. In that match, rookie
Mason Kolls suffered a 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 loss to Chanasorn Nakaurai for the hard-fought setback.
Lacombe was edged on the top line by Edward Ayers (6-4, 6-3) and
Andy Mason nearly picked off a set against Pally Ray at No. 2 before falling in the match (7-6, 6-3).
CNU will next travel to Southern Virginia University for mid-week Capital Athletic Conference action on Thursday, April 11 with match time set for 3:00 pm.
