NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- After another impressive showing by the second-ranked Captains last week in which they went 3-1 and scored 54 runs, a pair of Christopher Newport infielders were named to the D3baseball.com National Team of the Week. For CAC Player of the Week
Nicholas Baham, it is his second appearance this season and third time in his career, while senior shortstop
Nick DiNapoli collected the honor for the first time. Their selection comes ahead of the Captains' regular season finale scheduled for a 3:30 pm start on the road Wednesday as CNU travels to take on No. 23 Randolph-Macon College.
Powering the Captains' dynamite offense in the three- and four-hole, DiNapoli and Baham went back-to-back with home runs twice last week and blasted a combined eight home runs over the course of CNU's four-game conference schedule. DiNapoli hit .500 on the week (7-for-14), including two home runs and two doubles. He scored five times and drove in four runs while also posting a perfect week defensively in 16 chances with four double plays turned.
Baham had a monster week at the dish for the Captains, hitting .500 as well (8-for-16), while slugging 1.688 on six home runs and a double. He drove in 10 runs and scored nine times while also delivering a pair of sacrifice flies. During the power surge, Baham shattered the Capital Athletic Conference record and also reset the Christopher Newport record for home runs hit in a single season. The nation's leader in roundtrippers now has 19 blasts after hitting five in the CAC series against York (Pa.).
The two seniors will look to continue bolstering the Captains' dangerous offense on Wednesday in the regular season non-conference finale at Randolph-Macon College. The two teams battled early in the year at Captains Park with CNU picking up a 4-3 win against the Yellow Jackets. Last season, R-MC defeated Christopher Newport in the NCAA South Regional Championship to earn a bid to the College World Series. The Captains are now 28-25 all-time against Macon.
Coming into Wednesday's tilt, the Captains own a 30-5 overall record while Randolph-Macon is 22-8-1 in 2019.
This season, CNU's vaunted offense ranks number one across all divisions of NCAA play with 12.5 runs per game while also leading the nation in walks, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage. The team ranks second nationally in home runs and total hits as the Captains have put up historic numbers in program lore. Individually,
Ryan Grubbs leads the nation in OBP with a .633 pace and
Seth Woodard ranks fourth nationally in walks with 41. In addition to leading the country in home runs, Baham also ranks second in RBI while Woodard is right behind, ranking fourth.
Conner Clark is tied for the national lead in stolen bases and also ranks fourth nationally in runs scored.
The eye-popping offensive numbers are supported by a strong pitching staff bolstered by a terrific bullpen.
Tyler Jumper and
Brian Owens have each appeared in 20 games this season out of the pen, leading the way for a relief staff that has an 11-1 record and 3.10 ERA. Jumper is 5-0 with a 0.80 ERA in 33.2 IP and has struck out 32 batters; Owens is 2-1 with a 2.00 ERA while posting 39 K in 27.0 IP. Senior
Austin Slough has also been excellent, going 1-0 with a 3.06 ERA with 19 whiffs in 17.2 IP. He struck out the side in the ninth inning against York (Pa.) on Senior Day last Sunday.
The Captains will be facing a talented Randolph-Macon squad that ranks 23rd in the nation. The Yellow Jackets won the team's second straight regular season Old Dominion Athletic Conference title and will be the top seed in the coming conference tournament. R-MC has won five of their last six games and will look to continue that momentum against CNU Wednesday.
Randolph-Macon ranks 13th nationally in scoring offense averaging just under nine runs per game. They are also one of the most sound teams defensively, ranking seventh nationally in fielding percentage. A strong junior class leads the offense with Mike Nickles (.339, 6 HR, 33 RBI) at the top of a list of six third-year players who have played in at least 28 games this season. Ryan Duphorn is one of them, hitting .323 with 30 runs scored and 12 stolen bases, while Reece Yeargain, who did not play in game one against the Captains earlier this spring, ranks third on the team in home runs and extra-base hits.
ODAC Pitcher of the Week Nick Roth leads the pitching staff with an 8-0 record and 1.96 ERA and 79 strikeouts over 69.0 IP. The senior has been one of the top pitchers in the nation this season, ranking third in K/BB ratio and 17th in strikeouts. Michael Zubovich also has yet to see a loss on his ledger with a 7-0 record in nine starts, posting a 3.14 ERA in 57.1 IP.
The Captains and Yellow Jackets will take the field at 3:30 pm on Hugh Stephens Field at Estes Park in Ashland, Va. Live stats and a live video webcast will be available with links at CNUsports.com.
