NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- In a battle of regionally-ranked tennis teams, the Christopher Newport Captains picked up a 5-4 win over Washington & Lee University in the regular season finale Sunday afternoon. The Captains won two of three doubles matchups and split singles to improve to a 12-8 on the year.
Taking on regional power Washington & Lee, CNU picked up just the third win ever against the Generals. Leading the way, rookie
Ryan Macy and senior
Nicholas Ruzicka each picked up a pair of wins on the day.
In doubles action, Macy paired with
Andy Mason for an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles against Mitchell Thomas and Bobby Neuner. CNU also won at No. 3 doubles where Ruzicka and partner
William Trang also won, 8-1, taking down Tye Loan and John Rudden.
Moving into singles play with a 2-1 lead, Christopher Newport earned the team victory with wins at No. 1, 4, and 5.
Dominic Lacombe outlasted Shepherd in a matchup of regionally-ranked individuals at No. 1. Lacombe dropped the first set but the CNU junior finished out the match with a 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 win.
Macy and Ruzicka won at 4 and 5, respectively, facing Noah Tapp and Rudden. Macy was also stretched to a third set before capturing a 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 victory. Ruzicka added a straight set win at No. 5 as CNU, 6-4, 6-2.
With the loss, Washington & Lee drops to 12-7 on the season.
CNU will return to action in the Capital Athletic Conference semifinals on Tuesday, April 30 as they travel to second-seeded Salisbury University for a 3:00 pm matchup.
