Nicholas Baham was named to the D3baseball.com National Team of the Week on Tuesday morning after helping lead the top-ranked Captains to a three-game sweep of Mary Washington last week. The Captains (18-2) will be back in action on Wednesday afternoon, hosting Marymount University in non-conference action at 3:00 pm.
The Captains' right-handed slugger earned a spot on the D3baseball.com National Team of the Week after leading the team in another dominant offensive showing in conference play. Baham smashed four home runs in three games and drove in a team-high eight RBI with five runs scored. He combined to go 7-for-15 (.467) and raised his batting average nearly 30 points to a season-high .316 after the weekend series, in which he was also perfect in 20 defensive opportunities.
It is the second time Baham has earned a spot on the National Team of the Week in his career. The CAC Player of the Week for his efforts, Baham moved into a tie for second all-time in career home runs following the performance with 27 career round-trippers. He logged back-to-back three-hit performances as he extended his season-best hitting streak to six games while growing his team-high RBI count to 35. With 10 homers this year, he also took over the national lead in the category, as well as home runs per game (0.45).
CNU will look to extend it's season-high 11-game winning streak on Wednesday as they play host to Marymount University (11-12) at 3:00 pm. In games played at Captains Park this season, Christopher Newport is 13-2 this season, riding a seven-game home win streak. CNU leads the all-time series with Marymount, 9-3, dating back to the inaugural Saints season in 2014.
The Captains feature the nation's leading offense and rank second among all NCAA Division I, II, and III schools with 12.3 runs per game. CNU also leads the nation in on-base percentage (.464), home runs per game (1.36), and ranks second in walks (157). As a team, the Captains rank in the top 20 in nearly every statistical category recorded by the NCAA, including ranking 14th nationally in team batting average with a .342 mark.
On the mound, two-time CAC Pitcher of the Week
Josh Husby has led the way and ranks 14th nationally in strikeouts this season. Husby is 5-1 with a 2.76 ERA in seven starts, striking out 51 in 42.1 IP. The bullpen has been extremely effective all season long, combining for a 6-0 record and 2.55 ERA this season with 97 K in 88.1 IP.
Tyler Jumper (4-0) has struck out 21 in 20.0 IP with a 0.45 ERA and
Brian Owens (1-0) has a team-high 24 K in 16.1 IP with a 1.10 ERA.
Marymount comes into Wednesday's tilt winners of their last three games and five of their last six. The Saints, playing in the Atlantic East Conference for the first season are off to a 5-1 start in league play. Led by seniors Austin Sizemore, Conner Hall and Luke Tyree, the Saints offense is averaging over five runs per game. Sizemore leads the team with 20 RBI while Hall has legged out 10 doubles on the year. Tyree is hitting .317 with eight extra-base hits while adding 12 stolen bases. On the mound, Ryan Bergenhagen (4-2) leads the squad with a 2.72 ERA in 36.1 innings pitched.
