Third-Ranked Captains Sweep Penn State Harrisburg; Webb and Moss Combine for 5-Inning No-Hitter in Nightcap

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport swept a Capital Athletic Conference softball doubleheader Tuesday from Penn State Harrisburg at Captains Park. CNU, ranked third in the country, showed tremendous strength hitting and pitching, scoring 21 times while allowing just two runs in the 10-2 and 11-0 sweep. The triumphs came in the final regular-season home games for the Captains.

Junior pitchers Trish Webb and Laura Kate Moss combined to hold the Lions hitless in the second game of the twin bill, giving up just one runner, a hit batter leading off in the fifth inning. The game was halted after five frames due to the eight-run rule. Webb started the nightcap and threw three perfect innings to earn the victory and improve to 7-2. She was followed by Moss for the final two innings. The no-hitter was the 25th in the 35-year history of the program, and the first since Aubrey Bates no-hit Penn State Harrisburg last year in Middletown, Pa.

CNU improved to 26-4 overall and 7-1 in the CAC with the victories on a sunny and pleasant day at Captains Park. Penn State Harrisburg fell to 12-16-1 and 1-9. The Lions scored two runs in the top of the first inning of the opener, but could not score again against CNU pitching the rest of the day.

Christopher Newport clubbed four more home runs Tuesday, giving the Captains 46 in 30 games played this season. Freshman Kaitlyn Hasty posted two more, one in each game, and now has 14 for the season. She is second in the country in home runs. Junior Calah Savage also went deep, crushing two in the opening game and going back-to-back with Hasty in the fourth inning of the 10-2 victory. Hasty and Savage combined to hit four home runs and drive in 11 runs in the doubleheader. CNU is second in the nation in home runs per game, and the Captains are just four away from matching the program's all-time record for home runs in a season.

Sophomore Emily Weatherholtz earned the victory in the opener to improve to 8-1. The Captains are now 18-2 at home this season, and 13-0 all-time vs. the Lions. Christopher Newport concludes the regular season with back-to-back doubleheaders this Friday and Saturday on the road. Ketih Parr's squad is scheduled to travel to Salisbury on Friday for a 2:30 p.m. twin bill. CNU then plays two on Saturday at Mary Washington beginning at 1:00 p.m. for the regular season finale.
