FROSTBURG, Md. -- Drew Cornell continued rewriting the record books on the defensive end, while 11 Captains registered at least one point as the 20th-ranked Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team took down Frostburg State, 13-8, during a Capital Athletic Conference match-up on Saturday afternoon at Bobcat Stadium.
During the contest, Cornell caused a pair of turnovers, giving him 94 during his decorated tenure. That stands as a new school record, topping the previous standard of 92 set by Teddy Pekalski from 2010-14.
Along with Cornell,
Phoenix Hines also caused two miscues against the Bobcats. That gave him 50 for the year, which stands as the second-highest single-season total in program history. He is three shy of matching Brandon Moloney's program record of 53 set during the 2016 campaign.
On the other side of the field,
Dylan Rice led the Captains with five points, including three goals.
Alex Horgan also came through with his first collegiate hat-trick, while
Brady Altobello and
Jordan Lee both scored twice.
With the victory, Christopher Newport improves to 10-6 on the season, including 3-2 against conference foes. The setback drops Frostburg State to 7-6 overall and 0-3 in league play.
Although Rice set-up two straight strikes by Altobello and
Lucas Barry to kick off the contest, Frostburg State retaliated. The hosts strung together three consecutive goals over the final nine minutes of the opening period to steal a 3-2 edge.
Needing to respond, the Captains had an emphatic answer in the second stanza. Carving up the Bobcats,
Jackson Deal assisted on a pair of goals by Rice and Horgan, while Lee and Altobello joined the fun with darts of their own. Eventually, Christopher Newport put together five straight goals, including one in the waning seconds of the first half, to snatch a 7-3 lead entering the break.
Despite a pair of quick goals by Frostburg State early in the third quarter, CNU never lost its swagger.
Will Stockhausen led CNU's response as the sophomore assisted on goals by Horgan and Lee before adding a man-up missile of his own. With that effort, Stockhausen registered points in his 22nd straight appearance, which stands as the longest run in program history.
Along with Stockhausen's performance, Rice teamed up with Hanes for his third goal, which helped the visitors push their lead to 11-5 entering the fourth quarter.
Once again, FSU opened the new stanza with a flurry as the Bobcats scored a pair of early tallies, but Christopher Newport never lost control. Closing out the contest in style, Horgan capped off his hat-trick with four minutes remaining before
Campbell Pozin added the final punctuation mark to lock up the 13-8 triumph.
Overall, Christopher Newport out-shot Frostburg State, 40-39, while the Bobcats held a 41-27 lead in ground balls. FSU also won 20 of the game's 24 faceoffs, but CNU's defense was up to the challenge. Along with the back line frustrating the opposing attack,
Scott McAneney made 11 saves in the crease, while
Andrew Clark added three more stops over the final three minutes.
CNU will return to action on Wednesday when the Captains host St. Mary's (Md.) at 4 p.m.
