In their last outing, the Captains saw several records fall during a setback at No. 1 Salisbury on Wednesday.
Drew Cornell led the way as he established a new career record with his 69th appearance and matched the program standard with his 92nd caused turnover. Meanwhile,
Scott McAneney set a new single-season saves mark after registering his 200th of the year, breaking the old record of 190 set by current assistant coach
Matt Hayden in 2016.
On the offensive end,
Will Stockhausen notched a hat-trick against the top-ranked Sea Gulls. That marked his 21st consecutive game with at least one point, breaking the old standard of 20 held by Adam Abbate and John Thompson.
Overall this season, Christopher Newport boasts the conference's top-three players in caused turnovers.
Phoenix Hines leads the way with 48, which also places him five shy of matching Brandon Moloney's program record of 53 set in 2016. Meanwhile,
Max Wayne sits second in the league with 45 caused turnovers, while Cornell is third with 36. Along with the defensive juggernauts,
Dylan Rice is third in the CAC with 40 goals.
On the other side of the field, Frostburg State has dropped its last four decisions, including a hard-fought 13-8 setback at No. 3 York (Pa.) on Wednesday. During that game, the Bobcats held a 5-3 halftime lead, but the Spartans used seven goals in the third quarter to jump-start a furious second-half rally. Jimmy Lucas and Matthew Ward both scored twice for FSU in that game, while Jack Marks notched 12 saves.
Overall this season, Sam Natvig ranks fourth in the conference with 114 faceoff victories in 216 total attempts. He also ranks fifth among conference performers with 57 ground balls. Equally impressive on the conference level, Garrett Colvin is sixth in the CAC with 25 caused turnovers and Marks ranks third with 153 total stops. On the offensive side, Paul Ruppert has a team-high 30 goals.
In six previous meetings between the two programs, Frostburg State holds a 4-2 edge in the series. Christopher Newport won last year's contest, 13-7, at Captains Turf Field. Rice led CNU with six points during that battle, while Marks made nine saves for the Bobcats.
