NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport's offense had a huge day Saturday as the Captains opened Capital Athletic Conference play at Southern Virginia University with two decisive victories. CNU, the top-ranked softball squad in the nation, posted triumphs by scores of 12-0 and 12-2 over the Knights in Buena Vista.
The Captains were powered by five home runs, including three off the bat of freshman
Kaitlyn Hasty and the other two from fellow freshman
Bailey Roberts.
Keith Parr's squad is now 18-2 overall and 2-0 in the CAC. Southern Virginia fell to 6-20 overall and 0-2 in league play. Both games Saturday were halted after five innings due to the eight-run rule on a sunny and pleasant day at Harvey-Dryden Field.
Hasty, who was honored as the national Player of the Week earlier this season, crushed a three-run shot in a seven-run fourth inning in the opening game. She followed with two more blasts in the nightcap, a solo bomb in the first and a two-run shot in the fourth. Hasty was three-for-six in the twin bill with six runs batted in. She has now hit nine home runs this season to lead the Captains in that category.
Roberts started the scoring in each game for the Captains by cracking a solo shot in the second inning of the opening game, and then launched a two-run shot in the first frame of the nightcap. Roberts was three-for-three with five runs batted in for the day.
Christopher Newport recorded 24 runs on 17 hits in the double dip. Junior starting pitchers
Trish Webb and
Aubrey Bates benefited from the run production. Webb picked up the victory in the opener to improve to 3-1 on the year, while Bates got the win in the nightcap and is now 8-1. CNU pitching yielded just two runs on nine hits in the two road wins.
Parr announced before the doubleheader began that Sunday's scheduled twin bill with Greensboro at Captains Park has been canceled due to an unfavorable forecast. The Captains return to action on Wednesday with a non-conference doubleheader at Randolph-Macon in Ashland. The twin bill is scheduled to get underway at 2:30 p.m.
