Barry Scores Twice, But No. 15 CNU Men’s Lacrosse Falls to No. 5 York (Pa.), 13-4, in Nationally-Ranked Showdown

YORK, Pa. -- Lucas Barry continued his stellar senior season, but the 15th-ranked Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team could not overcome an early deficit as No. 5 York (Pa.) walked away with a 13-4 triumph during a Capital Athletic Conference clash on Saturday afternoon at Kinsley Field.

During the contest, Barry posted a pair of goals, including his seventh man-up tally of the year. The senior has now scored in 17 consecutive games dating back to last season, which equals the second-longest streak in program history. He also has 11 straight multi-goal efforts this year.

On the other side of the field, Scott McAneney registered 13 saves against the Spartans. With that performance, he bumped his total to 155 stops this year, which places him fifth on the program's all-time single-season list. He also stands just six saves shy of becoming the third goalie in CNU history to register 300 career stops.

Along with the headliners, Brady Altobello and Glenn Doering also scored for the Capains, while Max Wayne came through with his league-leading 44th caused turnover of the season.

With the setback, Christopher Newport falls to 8-4 on the season, including 1-1 in league action. York (Pa.) is now 10-1 with a 1-0 mark against conference foes.

After a lengthy defensive battle early in the contest, the two teams traded runs. The Spartans opened the scoring with three straight goals late in the first period. Firing back, Doering added CNU's first dagger in the final minute of the opening quarter. Then, in the second stanza, Tyler Iriondo won the opening faceoff before Will Stockhausen connected with Altobello on the squad's second strike.

Inching back into the game, the Captains stepped up on the defensive end. During a three-minute window, Wayne, Campbell Pozin, and Alex Horgan all forced turnovers, while McAneney stoned an on-target tracer. Unfortunately, with time winding down in the first half, the Spartans tossed two late goals on the board to steal a 5-2 lead entering the break.

After halftime, the hosts owned the third quarter. Although McAneney came through with four saves during the stanza, York was undeterred. The squad eventually put together three straight goals in the period to grab an 8-2 edge entering the final 15 minutes of the contest.

Shrugging off the third-quarter setbacks, Miles Collins quickly connected with Barry on a man-up missile to open the fourth. Unfortunately, the Captains could never close the gap any further. Although Barry added his second goal of the stanza after another caused turnover by Pozin, the Spartans continued rolling on the way to the 13-4 victory.

Overall, York held a 42-33 advantage in shots and a 40-26 lead in ground balls. Jackson Deal collected a team-high four rollers for CNU, while Stockhausen, Pozin, Jordan Lee, and Drew Cornell all had three apiece. The Spartans also won 17 of the game's 20 faceoffs.

Christopher Newport will return to action on Wednesday when the squad heads to Stevenson for a 7 p.m. showdown.
