NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Outscoring the Seahawks by a final count of 50-3 over the three-game Capital Athletic Conference series this weekend, the second-ranked Christopher Newport baseball team was dominant on both sides of the ball as they improved to 17-2 overall, 6-0 in league action. The Captains defeated St. Mary's (Md.) twice on Sunday by scores of 19-2 and 13-0.
The powerful Captains offense scored 50 runs in the three-game league series for the second straight weekend, after outscoring Frostburg State 50-24 last weekend. CNU has now scored 100 runs in six CAC games for an average of 16.7 runs per game against league opponents.
The wins extended CNU's win streak to eight as Christopher Newport has scored in double figures in six of those eight wins. For the season, the Captains have scored in double figures in 13 of the team's 19 games and are averaging exactly 12 runs per game this season.
During game one on Sunday, sophomore
Conner Clark became just the fourth player in program history to steal five bases in a game and the first since Jeremy Elliott robbed five against Chapman in the 2003 NCAA Division III National Championship. Clark is now 23-for-24 on the basepaths this season, ranking in the top ten for a single season and giving the second-year player 52 thefts for his career. In just his sophomore season, Clark passed Garrett Robinson for fifth all-time in career steals.
Hitting out of the leadoff spot, Clark was a big part of the offensive outburst, combining for five hits between the two games with six runs scored. Senior
Nicholas Baham led the run production with 6 RBI combined while also smashing his team-leading sixth home run of the season. Baham moved into a tie for fifth all-time with 23 career homers, matching Greg Mears (1989, 91-93).
While the offense roped 38 hits in the two games on Sunday, the pitching staff continued to impress as well. In game one, junior
Teddy Herbert (4-1) held St. Mary's scoreless for six innings and tossed a career-high eight innings to pick up the win. Herbert scattered six hits and allowed just one walk for the win.
Corey Williams closed out the game one victory by tossing the ninth frame.
In game two, sophomore
Nathan Clements (2-0) put together a career performance to work the yeoman's share of the workload in a combined shutout. He struck out 10 batters and held the Seahawks to just three hits over 6.0 innings of work. Clements set personal bests in every single game category with the effort, and lowered his season ERA by over two runs.
In relief of Clements, senior
Austin Slough, sophomore
Carter Strain, and junior
Brian Owens closed out the combined shutout with clean innings. Owens struck out the side in the bottom of the 9th in a dominating bullpen performance to slam the door on the three-game sweep.
CNU was originally scheduled to travel to Hampden-Sydney College on Monday but that game was postponed due to the weekend schedule adjustments. The next game on the schedule for Christopher Newport is at home on Friday, March 29 to kick off another three-game set in conference play against Mary Washington. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 pm from Captains Park.
