NEWPORT NEWS, Va. --
The 14th-ranked Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team will kick off Capital Athletic Conference play on Saturday at 1 p.m. when CNU hosts Southern Virginia at Captains Field.

Entering the contest, Christopher Newport sits at 7-3 overall, including 4-1 at home. Southern Virginia is 5-5 with a 1-4 record outside of Buena Vista.

For those fans unable to attend the game, live stats will be available at CNUsports.com. The Captains will also provide a broadcast of the contest with Andy McGregor and Will Geise calling all of the action. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the CNU schedule page.

Christopher Newport saw its four-game winning streak come to an end on Thursday evening when the Captains dropped a 14-9 decision against No. 12 Stevens. During the contest, Dylan Rice scored for the 18th consecutive game, which established a new program record. The sophomore eventually struck three times against the Ducks, marking his seventh straight hat-trick. Overall this season, he ranks third in the conference with 29 goals.

Facing a squad that ranked among the national leaders in fewest turnovers per game, the CNU defense also caused 15 miscues against Stevens. On an individual level, Max Wayne and Phoenix Hines both caused four turnovers apiece. Wayne currently leads the NCAA with 40 caused turnovers this season, while Hines has 37. Drew Cornell has also forced 26 turnovers this year and leads the squad with 42 ground balls.

All three of those Captains already rank in the top-10 on the program's all-time single-season caused turnover list. They are chasing Brandon Moloney's record of 53, which was set during the 2016 campaign. Cornell is also 10 shy of matching the career standard of 92, which was established by Teddy Pekalski from 2010-14.

Also orchestrating a dominant 2019 campaign, Scott McAneney leads the CAC with a .597 save percentage, which currently stands as the top mark in program history. His 123 total saves also place him second in the conference. The junior has at least 10 stops in eight of his appearances this year.

On the other side of the field, Southern Virginia is on a two-game roll with a pair of lopsided victories over Carthage and Hendrix over the last seven days. On the offensive side, the Knights have been paced by Zach Danneman, who leads the nation with 44 goals. His 57 points also stand second in the country and first in the CAC, while Chandler Wescott is sixth in the NCAA with 44 points.

On the defensive end, Ian Arave has been equally impressive this year. He currently ranks third in the nation with 132 saves. Meanwhile, Nick Bair has a team-high 18 caused turnovers while forcing at least two in six of his appearances.

Saturday's contest will mark the eighth meeting between the Captains and Knights. CNU currently holds a 7-0 record against Southern Virginia, including a 20-7 win last year.
