NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Capping off a weekend that saw the fourth-ranked CNU baseball team score 50 runs in three games, the Captains (13-2, 3-0) closed out a three-game sweep of Frostburg State (10-3, 0-3) with a 14-6 win over the Bobcats on Sunday afternoon. Seniors
Seth Woodard and
Nicholas Baham combined for 7 RBI with three hits apiece to lead the way.
The Captains put up a six-spot in the bottom of the first inning and cruised from there. CNU scored in five of their eight trips to the plate with multiple runs scored in four of those frames.
Jumping on Frostburg State starter Mike Livingston, the first four batters picked up base hits.
Conner Clark reached on an infield single followed by an RBI double by Woodard.
Nick DiNapoli singled to right and Baham followed with a hard hit single through the left side for an RBI knock. A sacrifice fly from
Jordan Mason ended the run of hits, but plated DiNapoli as CNU took a 3-0 lead.
The next two batters,
Trey Hicks and
Ryan Grubbs, walked to load the bases for number nine hitter
Austin Henry. The starting second baseman roped the first pitch he saw to the wall in right center field, clearing the bags with a double to put the Captains ahead, 6-1, after one inning of action.
On the mound, sophomore starter
Nathan Clements (1-0) worked his way through the first two innings with a pair of runs scored. He then retired the side in order in both the third and fourth innings by keeping the ball on the ground with six straight groundball outs. In the fifth, Jessie Hodge delivered a two-run homer off Clements, but the sophomore right-hander responded by striking out a pair and inducing a weak flyball to left to close out the five-inning performance.
The dangerous CNU lineup added to his run support with a run in the third and three more in the fourth. First,
John Anderson lofted a sacrifice fly that plated Hicks in the third after a lead-off double. Then, in the fourth, Woodard walked and senior
Joseph Cutchins, in the game after an injury to DiNapoli, singled up the middle. That would bring up Baham, who sat on a 2-0 pitch and crushed a mammoth shot to deep center field for his fifth round-tripper of the season. The homer was the 22nd of his career, moving him up to 6th on the all-time chart at CNU.
CNU tacked on two more in the seventh and another pair in the eighth for the final tally. With two on and two out in the bottom of the seventh, Woodard stepped in and capped a terrific performance with a two-run double into the left field corner. Woodard finished the game 3-for-3 and a pair of walks to reach base in all five of his plate appearances. He drove in three and scored twice. In the 8th inning, Baham led off with a single and moved up to third on a single by Bason and walk from Hicks. Grubbs then smacked a hard hit single into left field to plate the final two runs of the game for the Captains.
Out of the pen,
Carter Strain surrendered a two-run home run but also picked up a pair of strikeouts in one inning of work. He gave way to senior
Austin Slough, who struck out one in a perfect seventh inning before handing the ball to junior
Brian Owens. Owens tossed the final two frames and struck out three.
Christopher Newport has now scored in double figures in 10 of it's 15 games this season and is averaging 11.7 runs per game while hitting .335 as a unit.
The Captains will return to action on Tuesday at 3:00 pm as they host Stevens Institute of Technology. They will then host Tufts University on Thursday, March 21 in more non-conference action this week.
