NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport will be at home this weekend, as the 11th-Ranked Captains will host Albertus Magnus (20-7) of New Haven, CT., Friday at the Freeman Center. The NCAA unveiled the 2019 Men's Basketball 64-team bracket early Monday afternoon.
Alfred University (NY) and Ramapo (NJ) will also play at the Freeman Center on Friday, with the winners of the two games advancing to meet on Saturday. Alfred is 23-4 and Ramapo has a record of 18-9 heading into NCAA play.
This will be CNU's 23rd NCAA appearance, and fourth straight. The Captains have never met any of the three teams heading to Newport News for the weekend action. CNU is 23-5 and
John Krikorian's squad has won nine straight games, including the Capital Athletic Conference title game Saturday over York, 78-56.
Game times Friday for the NCAA opening round games will be 5:30 for the Alfred-Ramapo game, and 7:30 for the CNU-Albertus Magnus battle. Saturday's game is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. start..Tickets will be available to the general public starting on Wednesday at the Freeman Center Ticket Office. Chairback seats will be $15.00, Adult General Admission seats will be $10.00, Senior/Youth/Student tickets with valid ID will be $5.00, and CNU Students will be free with valid ID.
Christopher Newport has won all 16 games played at the Freeman Center this season, and the Captains were led by senior
Marcus Carter's career-high 31 points on Saturday. Carter, a first team All-Conference selection in the CAC this season, is just 13 points shy of sixth place on the school's all-time scoring list.
Albertus Magnus is the Champion of the Great Northeast Conference. The Falcons defeated St. Joseph (CT.) in the title game on Saturday, 81-77. Although CNU and Albertus Magnus have never met, Coach Krikorian's first victory ever as a head coach came 14 seasons ago in his first game at the Merchant Marine Academy...over Albertus Magnus.
Ramapo, a Final Four team last year, received an at-large bid after losing in the New Jersey Athletic Conference semifinals to New Jersey City, 66-58. Alfred won the Empire 8 Championship on Saturday over St. John Fisher, 90-78. The Saxons will be making their first NCAA appearance since the 1996-97 season.
