HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- The 16th-ranked Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team will head to Hampden-Sydney for a non-conference clash beginning on Saturday at 2 p.m.
The Captains enter the weekend with a 1-1 record, while Hampden-Sydney sits at 3-0 on the season. So far this year, CNU has dropped its only road tilt of the 2019 campaign, while the Tigers won their only previous home contest.

Entering the match-up, Christopher Newport ranks among the national leaders in both shooting percentage and saves. The offense is converting 37 percent of its shots into goals, which places the squad 14th in the NCAA. Meanwhile, between the pipes,
Scott McAneney has collected 27 total saves in his first two outings. That ranks 10th in the country and fourth among players who have appeared in fewer than three games.
Leading the way on the offensive side,
Brady Altobello has a team-high seven points, including five goals.
Dylan Rice has also struck four times, while
Will Stockhausen has a team-high three assists. On the defensive side, CNU has forced 23 turnovers this year, including three apiece by
Phoenix Hines,
Aidan FitzGerald, and
Max Wayne. Hines and FitzGerald have also taken the bulk of the team's 53 faceoffs this season with FitzGerald boasting a team-high eight ground balls.
Drew Cornell has also snatched seven rollers for the Captains.
On the other side of the field, Hampden-Sydney currently ranks second in the NCAA in man-up offense after converting 87 percent of its extra-man opportunities. Sean Duffy has led the way with four man-up strikes this year, which also stands as the top total in the country. Meanwhile, the Tigers also rank fourth in the country with 43 saves. William Schlager has 20 stops for HSC, while Nick Arcuri has contributed 18 in his two starts.
Among other standouts for Hampden-Sydney, Jake Brummett has won 30 of his 51 faceoffs while securing 20 ground balls. Meanwhile, John Burke has a team-high 15 points, and Jake O'Brien leads the squad with nine goals on just 19 shots. His .474 shooting percentage places him among the national leaders.
In 12 previous meetings between the two programs, Hampden-Sydney holds a 7-5 edge. Christopher Newport won last year's match-up, 13-9, at Captains Turf Field. Rice contributed seven points, including four assists, during that game for CNU. Burke had a pair of goals for the Tigers.
Following Saturday's action, Christopher Newport will return home for a 7 p.m. battle with No. 13 Roanoke at Captains Field on February 27.
