NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Six different Captains posted multi-goal efforts, while freshman
Brady Altobello led the way with four strikes as the 13th-ranked Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team stormed past Colorado College, 16-9, during a non-conference battle on a gorgeous Friday afternoon at Captains Field.
Making an impressive home debut, Altobello registered five total points, including three goals during a momentum-turning rally in the second quarter.
Dylan Rice and
Will Stockhausen also contributed four points apiece to headline a well-rounded attack.
On the defensive side,
Scott McAneney stood tall against the potent Tiger attack with 16 saves.
Max Wayne also forced three turnovers, while
Drew Cornell caused a pair and scooped up a team-high six ground balls.
With the victory, Christopher Newport improves to 1-1 on the season, while Colorado College falls to 0-1.
Kicking things off quickly, Stockhausen torched the back of the net for the game's first two goals, including a nice strike while splitting a pair of defenders on the right side of the field. Meanwhile, on the defensive end,
Jackson Deal and
Campbell Pozin stood up an attacker with a textbook double-team to end an early threat by Colorado College.
Still rolling on the offensive side, Altobello and Rice teamed up on back-to-back goals to stretch the lead to four. First, Altobello snapped off his first strike of the contests off a feed from Rice before he returned the favor on the game's fourth goal.
Following a Colorado College timeout, the Tigers regrouped. Rallying from behind, the visitors capped off the first quarter with two straight tallies before opening the second stanza with two more on the way to a 4-4 deadlock. Needing to regroup, the Captains called a timeout of their own, and the stoppage paid immediate dividends.
Just nine seconds after the ensuing faceoff,
Spencer Shipman shoveled to Pozin, who unleashed a dagger. After Altobello extended the lead to two with his second strike, Pozin came back for more. Following a faceoff win by
Phoenix Hines, Pozin took possession, made one cut around a defender, and bolted up the field before jamming home his second goal of the contest to grab a 7-4 edge with less than eight minutes remaining in the first half.
Keeping the pressure on, Christopher Newport capped off the second quarter in style. Altobello fired two goals in the final six minutes, including a highlight-reel, backhand flip along the right post. Meanwhile,
Glenn Doering joined the fun with his first goal of the year to help push the lead to 10-4 entering the break.
Following halftime,
Lucas Barry kept the momentum after depositing a pair of goals, including a long-rage dart off a feed from Pozin.
Staring at a 12-4 deficit, the Tigers fought back. Over the final eight minutes of the third quarter, Colorado College out-scored the Captains, 4-2, despite a pair of rockets from
Griffin Hanes. With the visitors inching closer, CNU saved the knockout blow for the fourth quarter.
Keeping the visitors at bay, Rice and
Jordan Lee added the final two nails as the sophomore standouts peppered the CC defense early in the stanza to regain a seven-goal lead on the way to the 16-9 triumph.
Overall, Colorado College held a slim 42-37 advantage in shots and claimed 22 of the game's 28 faceoffs.
Aidan FitzGerald won three faceoffs for the Captains, while Hines picked up a pair.
Christopher Newport will return to action on February 23 when the squad travels to Hampden-Sydney for a 2 p.m. battle.
