Christopher Newport opened the 2019 season last weekend with a pair of wins against Ferrum College. CNU won by scores of 16-1 and 10-4, pairing an explosive offense with solid pitching. Senior catcher
Ryan Grubbs drove in six runs and went 4-for-5 in the opening game to lead the way, while newcomer
Trey Hicks went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and three runs scored. As a team, CNU hit .371 with nine extra-base hits and 26 total base knocks.
On the other side of the field, sophomore
Josh Husby (1-0) struck out 10 in 5.0 innings of work while allowing just three hits.
Gray Goodrich also allowed just one earned run over 5.0 IP in his start, while the bullpen effort was led by junior
Andrew Suppa with three strikeouts in two perfect innings of relief.
It will be the first matchup in program history for Christopher Newport against both Oglethorpe and Millsaps. CNU has played Emory once, dropping a 1-0 decision to the Eagles in 2007.
This season, Oglethorpe opened the season with a 5-0 win over Covenant before dropping the next three games to start the year 1-3. The Stormy Petrels lost twice at Covenant before falling, 10-4, at Piedmont on Wednesday, February 13. Senior Andrew Mink is off to a hot start with five hits, including a home run and two doubles, with six RBI so far. Sophomore Alec Babb is 6-for-15 with three doubles and 5 RBI.
Millsaps defeated LeTourneau, 8-4, before dropping games against Maryville (TN) and Centenary. The Majors have hit three home runs in their first three games, including a pair off the bat of Jimmy Fondren. Fondren is hitting .462 with six hits in his first 13 at-bats; Brennan Ducote has the other homer for Millsaps and is hitting .545 through the first three games.
Rounding out the weekend's opponents is Emory, opening the year with a 2-1 win against LaGrange. The Eagles will face Pacific Lutheran and Whitworth prior to the matchup with CNU on Sunday. With the score knotted at 1-1 in the bottom of the ninth inning, sophomore Jack Rubenstein delivered a groundball to shortstop and an errant throw chased home junior Ryan Adelman. On the mound, Richard Brereton tossed 8.0 innings and struck out 8 with just four hits allowed in the season debut.
After the three game road trip, CNU will return to Captains Park for seven straight games including six in an eight-game stretch. That run will begin on Tuesday, February 19 against Eastern Mennonite at 2:00 pm.
