Captains Host Mary Washington Saturday in Key CAC Basketball Doubleheader

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - CNU and Mary Washington battle Saturday at the Freeman Center in Capital Athletic Conference action. The basketball doubleheader begins at 2:00 p.m. with the women's game, followed by the men's game at approximately 4:00 p.m. Seven new members of the Christopher Newport Athletic Hall of Fame will be inducted at halftime of the men's game.

Both CNU squads will be looking for revenge after losing in Fredericksburg to the Eagles on January 5th. Bill Broderick's women's squad dropped a 66-53 decision, while John Krikorian's team fell by a 69-61 verdict. The game marks the first of three straight at home for both CNU squads.

Christopher Newport is coming off a doubleheader sweep at St. Mary's College (Md.) on Wednesday night. The women recorded a 65-55 victory, followed by a 79-76 win by the men over the Seahawks. Senior Jessica Daguilh registered a career-best performance from the free-throw line and rookie Sondra Fan was 8-for-10 from the field as the CNU women held on to improve to 15-5 overall and 6-3 in the CAC. Daguilh scored a game-high 20 points and Fan poured in 18 to lead the way. The men connected for seven three-pointers in the second half Wednesday night, and improved to 17-3 overall and 7-2 in the CAC. Sophomore Jason Aigner led the way with 20 points, including six-of-ten shooting from behind the arc. The Captains recorded a dozen threes on 28 attempts from long range for the night. CNU managed to hang on to the win despite losing two starters on the same play with 3:36 to play in the second half. Senior Tyler Femi and junior Luther Gibbs both left the game after suffering leg injuries, and did not return. The back-and-forth battle produced 11 lead changes and was tied at eight different points.

Mary Washington's women's squad enters play on Saturday with a 10-10 overall mark and a 4-5 record in league play. Junior Emily Thompson leads the way for the Eagles, averaging 13.1 points per game and tops the conference in three-point shooting with 52 triples. She is shooting 37.8 percent from long distance. The UMW men are 14-6 overall and 6-3 in the CAC. Freshman Greg Rowson leads the squad in scoring, averaging 16.4 points per game. Senior Johnny Cronin is scoring 12.7 points per game and pulling down a league-best 9.7 rebounds per contest.

At halftime of the men's game, seven new members of the CNU Athletic Hall of Fame will be inducted. It will be the 31st class of inductees, and will grow the total number of inductees to 142. The new Hall of Famers include Conley Taylor (men's basketball), Winston Mattheisen (men's soccer), Bailey Jensen and Abby Hogge (volleyball), Clyde Lewis (Track & Field), Joseph Evans (men's golf), and Caitlin Cahill (field hockey).

Tickets for the twin bill will be available at the Freeman Center Ticket Office. Both games will be streamed live on CNUsports.com/watch, with live stats of both games also available. The men's game will be broadcast live on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM) with the pre-game show beginning at approximately 3:40 p.m.
