Christopher Newport Hosts Randolph-Macon College in Women's Basketball Action Saturday at 2:00 PM

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport women's basketball team is back in action on Saturday afternoon as the Captains host Randolph-Macon College (2-5) at 2:00 pm. After a 73-50 win at Stevenson to open the month of December, the Captains are now 6-3 heading into the non-conference matchup at home.

With just eight home games on the regular season schedule for the Christopher Newport women's basketball team, the Captains will look to take advantage of the Freeman Center hardwood on Saturday as they take on the Yellow Jackets. Christopher Newport is off to a 6-3 start this season with a 2-0 record in home games to extend the all-time record at the Freeman Center to 222-38 for a winning percentage of over 85%.

For fans unable to attend in person, a live video webcast and live stats will be available at CNUsports.com. The all-time matchup favors Randolph-Macon slightly, as the Captains are 8-10 all-time against the Yellow Jackets. The last bout in the series came in the NCAA Tournament Second Round at the end of the 2017-18 season in which Christopher Newport captured an 84-58 win.

This season, the Captains have featured a high-powered offense that is currently leading the nation in scoring and rebounding with the frenetic defense that ranks first nationally in steals and fourth in turnovers forced. Christopher Newport is averaging over 80 points per game while hauling in over 50 rebounds per contest as one of the nation's leading units. The performance on the offensive glass has been particularly impressive, grabbing 23.0 offensive boards per game.

Individually, Anaya Simmons and Julia Ng lead the rebounding effort with 6.7 and 6.2 rebounds per game, respectively. Simmons, a freshman, is also leading the team in scoring with 10.8 points per game to headline a group of four Captains pouring in 10.0 points per game or more. Sophomores Natalie Terwilliger (10.5) and Sondra Fan (10.0) are joined by senior Kiana Kirkland (10.1) to round out the top offensive performers so far this season.

The Captains will be taking on a Randolph-Macon squad that has returned one of the nation's top players to it's lineup this season. Senior center Kelly Williams leads all active players in Division III in scoring, rebounding, blocks, and double-doubles during her career. She is one of only two active players in NCAA Division I, II, or III to have scored 1,500+ points and grabbed 1,000+ rebounds in her career, joining Oregon's Ruthy Hebard. This season, Williams came off the bench for the first three games of the season before returning to the starting lineup; in her three starts, she is averaging 18.0 points and 13.3 rebounds per game. Also helping propel the Randolph-Macon offense this year is senior forward Michal Ross, averaging 13.3 points per game.

Following Saturday's matchup with R-MC, the Captains will take the week off for final exams before closing out the first semester with a road game at Virginia Wesleyan University next Sunday, December 15 at 1:00 pm.
