Christopher Newport Women's Basketball Upends Stevens Institute of Technology in Holiday Classic, 89-56

HOBOKEN, N.J. -- In a bounceback victory on the road, the Christopher Newport women's basketball team sailed to a big win over Stevens on Sunday afternoon, 89-56. The Captains improved to 9-4 overall behind a well-balanced team effort that included a breakout game for sophomore Jessica Foster, pouring in a season-high 17 points.

Foster hit five three-pointers in the game and surpassed 100 made triples in her career during the victory. She is just the eighth player in program history to eclipse 100 made three-pointers and only the second Christopher Newport women's player to reach the mark in just her second season. She joins CNU Athletics Hall of Famer Chelsie Schweers, who logged 202 made three-pointers in her first two seasons.

Taking on the host Ducks of Stevens Institute of Technology (3-6), the Captains pulled away in the middle two quarters, outscoring the home team 50-24 between the second and third frames. Four Christopher Newport players finished in double figures, led by Foster's 17-point performance, and rookie Anaya Simmons added a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Sondra Fan, with 13 points, and Natalie Terwilliger, with 10 points, rounded out the top scoring efforts by the Captains.

Defensively, the Captains won the battle of the boards again, outrebounding Stevens by a final count of 44-38 while being led by sophomore Julia Ng with 11 rebounds. Christopher Newport forced 33 turnovers and grabbed 23 steals as seven different players picked up multiple thefts in the game. Rookie Zoe Costley had a team-high four steals in just seven minutes of action.

Stevens opened the game with a bucket on their first possession, but Christopher Newport strung together the next seven points to take the lead for the remainder of the contest. Julia Hobbs, in her first career start, opened the scoring with a put-back layup after an offensive rebound, and Simmons did the same after a steal by Jasmine Norman. Foster hit the first of her five triples to make it 7-2 on an assist by Kiana Kirkland. The Captains would go on to take a 20-16 lead after the first ten minutes and then extended to a 47-33 at halftime.

In the second quarter, a 14-5 run at the end of the stanza gave the Captains a 14-point lead heading into the intermission. Foster and Kirkland had back-to-back three-pointers and Sondra Fan added one later in the burst. Also, Ng and Simmons combined to go 5-for-6 from the free-throw line at the end of the frame to help extend to a then game-high 15-point lead.

A quick burst out of the locker room continued to grow the lead for the Captains, who led by 28 points with 3:27 remaining in the third quarter. Foster buried a three-pointer and then put in a pair of free-throws for a personal 5-0 run as part of the 16-2 game-clinching spurt. Christopher Newport continued to apply pressure and force turnovers and cruised into the fourth quarter with a 30-point advantage, 70-40.

In the fourth quarter, the Captains reserves shot 43.8% (7-16) from the floor including knocking down three shots from beyond the arc. Foster, Ashton Clark, and Lizzie Thibodeau all hit from long range as the lead held at around 30 points for the duration of the period. Sawyer Freeland also knocked down a pair of shots for four points while also grabbing two rebounds, dishing two assists, and grabbing a pair of steals.

The win featured the Captains' fourth performance with 85 points or more in the last six games and seventh overall this season. Christopher Newport is now averaging 82.2 points per game through the first 13 games of the season.

The Captains will continue to test their mettle away from home this week as Christopher Newport travels to the St. Mary's (Md.) Classic on January 3-4. First, the Captains will take on Susquehanna University at 6:00 pm on the third before facing Concordia University of Chicago on January 4 at 2:00 pm.
