VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Christopher Newport and Virginia Wesleyan will play for the 87th time in men's basketball action Sunday afternoon. The annual renewal of the long-running rivalry will tip off at 3:30 p.m. at the Batten Center.
The Captains are 7-3 on the year and are coming off a seven-day break for final exams.
John Krikorian's squad last played on Saturday, December 7th, falling at ninth-ranked and undefeated Randolph-Macon, 79-62. The Marlins are 7-1 on the season and have won four straight games, most recently a 64-57 victory at 16th-ranked Guilford last Saturday.
Christopher Newport has won 50 of the first 86 meetings of the rivals, including the last four. Last season at the Freeman Center, the Captains registered a 97-67 triumph over the Marlins.
Junior
Jason Aigner continues to lead the Captains in the scoring column, averaging 12.6 points per game. Senior
Dalon McHugh II has recorded back-to-back double doubles for the Captains, and posted 16 points and ten rebounds at R-MC. Junior forward Tim Fisher leads the Wesleyan attack, leading the squad in points (14.6) and rebounds (8.8) per game.
Christopher Newport and Virginia Wesleyan have established themselves as two of the top men's programs in the country in recent years.
John Krikorian is in his tenth season leading the Captains, and has guided his program to its first two Final Fours, and six NCAA appearances in all in nine seasons at the helm. Dave Macedo is in his 20th season leading the Marlins, and has led his program to three Final Fours, including a National Championship, and has advanced to the NCAA Tournament 11 times in 19 years.
