VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Playing for the final time before the holiday break, the Christopher Newport women's basketball team is back in action on Sunday afternoon as they travel to face Virginia Wesleyan University (2-7). The Captains will put a 7-3 overall record on the line at 1:00 pm from the Batten Center on the campus of Virginia Wesleyan.
Christopher Newport has won three straight games including a thrilling 95-87 overtime win at home over Randolph-Macon in their last action over a week ago. In that game, the Captains were led by sophomores
Sondra Fan and
Natalie Terwilliger with a pair of career-high 27-point performances. Terwilliger was named CAC Player of the Week after a double-double and key play down the stretch against the ODAC foe.
Virginia Wesleyan has dropped back-to-back games in conference play and also hasn't played since December 7 when Hollins handed the Marlins a 71-63 setback. Sunday's game between the Captains and Marlins will be the 67th all-time matchup between the cross-water rivals. Christopher Newport has won 10 straight in the series to take a 45-21 advantage all-time.
Powered by the impressive performance against the Yellow Jackets, Terwilliger took over as the team leader in scoring with 12.3 points per game this season. She has played just 17.6 minutes per contest and is also grabbing 6.2 rebounds per contest while shooting nearly 48% from three-point land. Fan raised her scoring average to 11.7 points per game to rank second on the team while also ranking second on the team in steals with 19 so far this season.
Defensively, junior
Bailey Hodges leads the Captains stifling defense, grabbing 26 steals in 10 games to rank as the top player in the conference. As a unit, the Captains rank second nationally in total steals and fourth in turnovers forced per game. Seven different players have already grabbed 11 or more steals this season.
On the other side, Virginia Wesleyan features a freshman guard leading the offense in Jessica Jennings. In nine games played and seven starts the newcomer is pouring in 11.7 points per game while also dishing 2.4 assists and grabbing 1.6 steals per game. Junior forward Sabrina Jones is the only other Marlin in double figures, scoring 11.3 points per game while shooting a team-best 43.2 percent from the floor.
