Captains Coast to 90-62 Victory over Texas-Dallas...Host Wisconsin-Stevens Point on Sunday

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport knocked down 16 three-point field goals Saturday, and defeated the University of Texas-Dallas, 90-62, on the opening day of the Hampton Marina Captains Classic at the Freeman Center. The victory was the sixth straight for Christopher Newport, and the Captains improved to 6-1 on the season. Junior Brandon Edmond posted a career-high 16 points to lead the way.

"We shot the ball really well today, and that opened up a lot of things for us," Head Coach John Krikorian said. "UT-Dallas was missing a couple of key players due to injuries, and that factored into it as well. I thought overall we executed our game plan and with the shots falling we were able to pull away."

Christopher Newport grabbed a 14-12 lead on a jumper from senior Nick Parks with 12:11 to play in the opening half, and never trailed again in the first meeting ever of the two schools. The bucket started a 22-5 run over the next nine minutes and the Captains posted a 39-23 advantage at halftime. Texas-Dallas, now 2-2, could get no closer than 11 in the second half, and the Captains pushed the lead to as many as 30 en route to the 28-point triumph.

Edmond led four Captains to reach double figures by making five of seven shots, including three of four behind the three-point line. Junior Jason Aigner finished with 11, and seniors Cutch Ellis and Savonte Chappell each posted ten points. All 18 Captains saw playing time, and 15 scored at least a point. Nine different Captains recorded at least one three-point field goal.

The Captains shot 54 percent for the game (32 of 59) and made 16 of 28 threes (57 percent). Christopher Newport out-rebounded UTD, 39-29, with junior Adrian Beasley leading the way with eight boards.

The victory was the 22nd straight for the Captains on the home floor at the Freeman Center. The two-day classic opened Saturday with a dramatic come-from-behind victory for Wisconsin-Stevens Point over Wilmington, 70-69. The Pointers battled back from a 19-point second half deficit to win the game in the final seconds on a three-point play.

The Captains will take on the Pointers of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (4-0) Sunday at 4:00 p.m. at the Freeman Center. UT-Dallas and Wilmington (1-4) will open the day Sunday with a 2:00 p.m. tipoff.
