Christopher Newport Women's Basketball Heads to Stevenson for Sunday Afternoon Matchup

STEVENSON, Md. -- The Christopher Newport women's basketball team will kick off December at Stevenson University (2-2) on Sunday afternoon, traveling to Southern Maryland for a 4:00 p.m. tip against the Mustangs. The Captains (5-3) will play four of their five games in the final month of 2019 on the road starting with the Sunday non-conference bout Sunday.

Christopher Newport is coming off a hundred-point performance in a win against Methodist on Tuesday night in which the Captains set a program record for three-pointers made in a game. Senior Kiana Kirkland led the scoring with 12 points and 15 different players got into the scoring column.

The Captains earned a 66-64 win against Stevenson in the first meeting between the two programs last season when the Mustangs traveled to Newport News. Sunday's return trip is just the second in the all-time matchup and fans who cannot attend in person will be able to catch the action live online with a video webcast presented by the Stevenson University athletic department. Live stats will also be available and links can be found on the women's basketball schedule at CNUsports.com.

Stevenson is coming off a loss to nationally-ranked Marymount University on the road Tuesday, November 26, and will be playing their first home game of the season against the Captains. The Mustangs opened with a win at York College (Pa.) before traveling to the EMU Invitational and dropping Apprentice before falling to Southern Virginia.

This season, rookie Anaya Simmons has led the Captains in both scoring and rebounding with 11.6 points and 6.9 rebounds per game. The freshman from Williamsburg, Va. was closing in on her first career double-double on Tuesday against the Monarchs but only logged 15 minutes in the blowout victory and finished with 10 points and 8 rebounds. She added two steals, and now has 11 thefts in eight games as part of the Captains high-throttle defense. Sophomore Natalie Terwilliger is also averaging double figures with 10.7 points per game while shooting a team-best 40% from beyond the arc.

Junior Bailey Hodges continues to lead the Captains defense with 20 steals already and has grabbed three or more in six of the Captains' eight games this season. As a team, the Captains rank second nationally in total steals and Hodges ranks 27th individually. Christopher Newport forces 29.6 turnovers per game, ranking in the top-ten in NCAA Division III.

Coming into Sunday's matchup against the Captains, Stevenson has been paced by junior guard Brandi Hall with 10.8 points per game while also dishing 3.0 assists per contest. Junior forward Olivia Coleman is just shy of a double-double per game with 9.5 points and 9.8 rebounds per matchup. Led by Coleman, Stevenson is one of the top rebounding teams in the nation with 47.3 per game.

The Captains will return home on Saturday, December 7 to take on Randolph-Macon College in their final home game of the 2019 calendar year. Tip-off against the Yellow Jackets is set for 2:00 p.m. from the Freeman Center.
