RALEIGH, N.C. -- The nationally-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team will look to bounce back just three days after their second loss of the season as they travel to a gym just three-and-a-half miles away from Wednesday night's setback. The Captains (4-2) travel back to Raleigh, North Carolina on Saturday to take on Meredith College (2-2) at 3:00 pm.
In the midst of a road-heavy non-conference schedule, the Captains will be playing in their fourth consecutive and sixth game away from home in the first seven contests this season. Christopher Newport has weathered the early season road trips to win two-thirds of their games thus far but has gone just 1-2 in games on the opponent's home floor.
Rookie
Anaya Simmons has taken the lead for the Captains offense so far as the freshman is pouring in 12.3 points per game after scoring a career-high 20 against William Peace on Wednesday night. In six career games, Simmons has logged four double-figure scoring performances while also leading the team in rebounding with 7.0 boards per game. She has also been extremely efficient offensively, knocking down over 67% of her shots from the floor.
Behind the freshman forward, the Captains feature a pair of players averaging double figures in sophomores
Natalie Terwilliger (10.8 ppg) and
Sondra Fan (10.7 ppg). Like Simmons, Fan has started all six games this season and has led the team in scoring in three games so far this season. Terwilliger has knocked down 50% of her three-point attempts and also ranks second on the team in rebounding with 5.8 per game.
After an 86-47 win at the Freeman Center last season, the Captains extended it's advantage in the all-time series against Meredith to 14-0. Christopher Newport has won every game in the matchup dating back to the 2000-01 season, including a 3-0 mark against the Angels since
Bill Broderick took the helm in 2012-13.
Meredith opened their season with a 63-50 win at Randolph before dropping a pair to Lynchburg and Guilford. In the team's last action, the Avenging Angels edged Shaw on the road, 79-77, and will face Christopher Newport in just their second home game of the season. For fans unable to make the trip, live stats and a live video webcast will be available courtesy of the Meredith athletic department at tip-off. Links to both can be found on the women's basketball schedule at CNUsports.com.
This season, junior Kimberly Schuh leads a trio of Angels in double figures through the first four games of the year. Schuh is scoring 18.0 points per game while Kate Perko is adding 17.5 points per game. Rounding out the trifecta is rookie Lindsay Bell, adding 10.0 points per game for Meredith. Unlike the Captains deep rotation, the Angels have five players who are averaging over 27 minutes per game this season and only nine have logged any minutes at all. Perko leads the team on the glass with 10.5 rebounds per game while playing a team-high 36.5 minutes per contest.
Following Saturday's non-conference bout, the Captains will return home for a single game on Tuesday, November 26 as they take on Methodist University. Christopher Newport will tip against the Monarchs at 6:00 pm.
