Tenth-Ranked Salisbury Shuts Out Christopher Newport, 51-0, in Saturday NJAC Matinee

SALISBURY, MD. –Christopher Newport football fell to 2-6 overall and 2-3 in conference play Saturday, dropping a 51-0 decision at tenth-ranked Salisbury University.

The Sea Gulls held a 3-0 edge after the opening quarter, but broke open the game by scoring touchdowns on six consecutive offensive possessions in the second and third quarters. SU also returned an interception for a score during the stretch, one of three picks thrown by Captains quarterbacks on a sunny and brisk afternoon.

The Sea Gulls, now 7-0 and 5-0 atop the New Jersey Athletic Conference, never allowed the Captains inside their 38-yard line and forced the Captains to punt ten times. A Senior Day crowd of 1,158 at Sea Gull Stadium watched the Gulls out-gain the Captains in total yardage, 598-155, and hold Christopher Newport to just six first downs.

Sophomore defensive back Deiontae Curry posted seven tackles, and also forced and recovered a fumble, and picked off a pass. Junior linebacker Sean Wilkinson also registered seven tackles. Junior punter Ben Garbarini set a new school record for punting yardage with 426 yards, an average of 42.6 per punt. On offense, junior wide receiver Garrison Mayo caught six passes for 63 yards.

The loss marked the second time this season the Captains have been held scoreless, and just the fourth time in program history.

Salisbury now holds 13-5 lead in the all-time series with the Captains, and can clinch the NJAC title with a triumph next Saturday at the College of New Jersey.

Christopher Newport hosts Rowan University next Saturday at TowneBank Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m., and senior class members will be honored in a pre-game ceremony on Senior Day.
