2019 Football Season Comes to a Close With 42-7 Defeat at Wesley College

DOVER, Del. - Christopher Newport's 2019 football season wrapped up Saturday afternoon, as the Wolverines of Wesley College defeated the Captains, 42-7. Art Link's squad finished the year with a 2-8 overall record and a 2-5 mark in the New Jersey Athletic Conference.

Wesley, now 9-1 and 6-1, jumped to an early 14-0 lead thanks to two touchdown passes on its first two possessions. The Wolverines held a 21-0 edge at the intermission, and maintained that lead through a scoreless third quarter. The Captains began a 16-play, 80-yard drive midway through the third quarter, and broke onto the scoreboard on the first play of the final stanza. Senior running back Nehemiah Harris plunged into the end zone from one yard out for the Captains lone score of the afternoon. The lengthy Captains possession took 8:25 off the scoreboard.

The Wolverines bounced back, though, and added three more scores in the final period for the 35-point triumph in front of 351 fans on a sunny, breezy and brisk day at Drass Field at Scott D. Miller Stadium. Wesley now holds a 5-2 lead in the all-time series with the Captains, and the Wolverines are hoping for an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament field. The 32-bracket will be released Sunday by the NCAA.

Wesley halfback Corderris Simpson caught three touchdown passes for the Wolverines, and logged 162 yards receiving. Starting quarterback Jon Mullin threw for three first half scores, and tailback Marcellus Pack ran the ball 22 times for 112 yards on the day.

Freshman Keith Martin led the Captains on defense, posting nine tackles, 2.5 for lost yardage including a sack. Fellow freshman defensive back Kenneth Sherrod recorded eight stops.

The Captains finished the 2019 season in a three-way tie for fifth place in the NJAC with Kean and the College of New Jersey with 2-5 records, although officially Christopher Newport finished seventh due to the tiebreaker process. Salisbury took the top spot by finishing with a perfect 9-0 record and a 7-0 NJAC mark, and the Sea Gulls will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA's.

The game Saturday marked the final action for 14 Christopher Newport seniors, who were honored last week before the Captains home game vs. Rowan. Wesley also honored their 14 seniors prior to Saturday's game with the Captains.

Christopher Newport will now begin looking to the 2020 season, which will be the 20th for the Captains football program. The team will play its 200th game in Week 2 next fall, and its fourth home game of the year will be the 100th all-time at TowneBank Stadium.
