Christopher Newport Women's Basketball Travels to Bridgewater College for Laura Mapp Classic

BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- Heading on the road for a pair of games against the Old Dominion Athletic Conference this weekend, the Christopher Newport women's basketball team will play in the Laura Mapp Classic hosted by Bridgewater College on Saturday and Sunday. First, the Captains will take on Washington & Lee University (1-0) at 7:30 pm on Saturday before turning around to face the host Eagles (0-1) at 4:00 pm Sunday.

Bridgewater will open the classic tournament against Gettysburg at 5:30 on Saturday as the Eagles host their first tip-off event. Live stats and video will be available for all the action with links found on the women's basketball schedule at CNUsports.com.

Last season, the Captains captured a 102-56 win over Bridgewater at Nininger Hall to improve to 10-13 all-time against the Eagles. The all-time series versus Washington & Lee favors the Captains, 4-1, with the last matchup coming in 2015-16 when Christopher Newport won 79-63 in the home opener.

Christopher Newport is coming off a 95-78 win against N.C. Wesleyan College on Wednesday night that saw Natalie Terwilliger and Kiana Kirkland each finish with a game-high 18 points. Sophomore Sondra Fan was the leading scorer in the first two games of the season with 18 against TCNJ and 11 versus 10th-ranked Messiah College. Through the first three games, Fan is the team's leading scorer with 10.3 points per game while Kirkland and Terwilliger are each pouring in better than nine points per contest.

Defensively, the Captains are leading the nation in steals so far this season while being led by junior guard Bailey Hodges. Hodges has nine steals through the first three games and ranks 25th in the nation in takeaways. Rebounding has also been key for the Captains, ranking second nationally with 149 boards. Rookie Anaya Simmons leads the Captains' contingent with 22 rebounds this season while sophomore Julia Hobbs has hauled in 21 in the first three games.

Washington & Lee got a triple-double out of sophomore guard Megan Horn in the season-opening victory against Pfeiffer and earned ODAC Player of the Week recognition for her performance. In the Generals' only action of the season so far, Horn recorded the first triple-double in program history with 19 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists as W&L won the game 76-62.

Bridgewater opened with a 96-82 loss to Southern Virginia on the road as the Eagles were unable to overcome a slow opening quarter. Bridgewater outscored SVU in the final three quarters, but a 16-point lead after the first ten minutes was too much to overcome despite a 29-point performance by Ahlia Moone. Moone's career-high came on just 15 attempts from the field as the junior knocked down eight shots including five three-pointers.

Following the trip to Bridgewater, Christopher Newport will head to Raleigh, N.C. for a pair, taking on William Peace University on November 20 at 6:00 pm and Meredith College on November 23 at 3:00 pm.
