NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Captains of Christopher Newport are off to a 1-1 start in the 2019-2020 season, and
John Krikorian's squad travels to Lancaster, Pennsylvania, this weekend for the two-day William Marshall Tipoff Tournament at Franklin & Marshall College.
The Captains, ranked ninth in the country, will play Friday at 5:30 p.m. against Marywood in the opening round of the tourney, followed by the host school against Lancaster Bible. The tournament continues on Saturday with the consolation game at 5:30 p.m. and the Championship at 7:30 p.m.
Christopher Newport opened the season last weekend with a four-point loss at Johns Hopkins, but bounced back with a 23-point home victory Tuesday night over Shenandoah. Junior
Jason Aigner led the way with 14 points Tuesday and is averaging 13 points per game. The Captains out-rebounded the Hornets Tuesday night by a margin of 60-41.
Senior
Cutch Ellis tops the squad so far in scoring and rebeounding, averaging 15 points per game over the first two games, and seven rebounds per contest. Junior
Adrian Beasley is scoring an average of 13 points per game, and freshman
Ian Anderson has scored 11 in each of his first two games as a Captain.
The game with Marywood will be the first meeting ever of the two programs. The Pacers are off to an 0-2 start, and have dropped decisions to Penn State-Harrisburg and Mount Aloysius to start the season.
Following the weekend tournament in Pennsylvania, the Captains will host the Christopher Newport Classic next Friday and Saturday, November 22 and 23, at the Freeman Center.
