NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The first of just eight home games in the regular season is set for 7:00 pm on Wednesday night as the Christopher Newport women's basketball team opens up the Freeman Center to take on North Carolina Wesleyan College (0-0).
The Captains (1-1) are coming off an opening-weekend split at the Messiah College Tip-Off Tournament where they dispatched of TCNJÂ with ease before falling to host and 10th-ranked Messiah. Christopher Newport is ranked No. 15 in the D3hoops.com Preseason Poll and is receiving votes in the WBCA Division III National Rankings.Â

Christopher Newport has not lost a home opener since 2006-07 with a 12-season winning streak heading into Wednesday night's matchup. After a 100-61 victory on the road last year, the Captains are now 65-16 all-time against N.C. Wesleyan College, in one of the longest standing matchups in program history. The two teams have played at least once in all but one seasons dating back to 1978-79.Â
Through the first two games, sophomore
Sondra Fan is leading the Captains offense with 14.5 points per game while also pacing the team's chaotic defense with six steals. Rookie
Anaya Simmons is adding 10.0 points and 8.0 rebounds per game in her first two career games while knocking down over 69% of her shots (9-13).Â
The team defense ranks third nationally in steals and seventh in turnovers forced per game as Christopher Newport forced 65 turnovers in the first two games. Along with Fan, junior
Bailey Hodges also has six steals to lead the team while Simmons has added five and a pair of Captains have ripped three steals in
Julia Ng and
Jovia Winkey.Â
The Captains will take on a North Carolina Wesleyan squad that is opening it's season in the game. The Battling Bishops were selected fifth in the in the USA South Athletic Conference's women's basketball coaches poll. All-Conference junior guard Kayla Johnson headlines the returners for the Bishops after she led the team in scoring with 13.3 points per game a season ago.Â
Following Wednesday night's non-conference matchup, the Captains will hit the road for four straight starting with a neutral site bout against Washington & Lee on Saturday, November 16 at the Laura Mapp Classic in Bridgewater, Va.Â
