Men's Basketball Opens 20th Season in Freeman Center Tuesday vs. Shenandoah at 5:30 p.m.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport University's men's basketball team opens the 2019-2020 home schedule Tuesday afternoon at the Freeman Center. The Captains, ranked ninth in the country, will host the Hornets of Shenandoah University with tipoff scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

The upcoming season marks the 20th since the opening of the Freeman Center for the 2000-2001 campaign. The Captains are 254-54 (.825) all-time after going 18-0 last year on their home court.

The Captains are 0-1 after dropping a 78-74 decision Saturday night at Johns Hopkins University, while the Hornets are also 0-1 following a season-opening loss at Mary Washington on Friday, 81-53. Junior Adrian Beasley led the Captains in their opener at Johns Hopkins, scoring a career-high 20 points. Beasley was joined in double figures by senior Cutch Ellis (19 points), junior Jason Aigner (12 points) and freshman Ian Anderson (11 points).

The Captains defeated the Hornets last year in Winchester, 91-78, on November 28th, and the programs have a long history. The schools were rivals for many years in the Dixie and later USA South Athletic Conference. Tuesday's game will be the 62nd in the all-time series, and the Captains hold a 48-13 edge and have won the last nine meetings.

Tuesday's action will be broadcast live on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM) with the pre-game show beginning at 5:10 p.m. The game will also be streamed live at cnusports.com/watch with live statistics also available.
