Captains Travel to Salisbury for Saturday Meeting With 10th-Ranked and Undefeated Gulls

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Christopher Newport football squad heads to Salisbury, Md., for a Saturday battle with the Sea Gulls of Salisbury University. The Captains are 2-5 overall and 2-2 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference, while SU is 6-0 and 4-0 and ranked tenth in the country. Kickoff time is set for 1:00 p.m. at Sea Gulls Stadium.

Art Link's Captains are coming off a 17-6 Homecoming victory last Saturday over the College of New Jersey at TowneBank Stadium. Salisbury won decisively at Kean last Saturday, 65-16.

This will be the 18th meeting of the schools, more than any other series in Christopher Newport football history, and the Sea Gulls hold a 12-5 edge in the series. The Captains, however, have gone 4-4 all-time in games played at Salisbury. Last year at TowneBank Stadium, the teams battled into overtime before the Sea Gulls escaped with a 27-24 triumph.

The Captains last week were led by a strong defensive effort against the Lions. Senior defensive lineman Ben James posted eight tackles to lead the way and also registered 2.5 sacks and blocked a field goal attempt by TCNJ.

Senior quarterback Jack Anderson led the offensive unit last week by setting a new school record for consecutive completions with 19, just two shy of the NCAA Division III all-time mark. He finished his near-perfect day 20 of 21 passing for 186 yards and a touchdown. Junior wide receiver Garrison Mayo caught eight passes for the Captains for 67 yards, and senior running back Nehemiah Harris finished the day with 14 carries for 94 yards, including a 43-yard touchdown run. The Captains out-gained the Lions, 280-211, in total yards, and 94-15 in rushing yards.

Christopher Newport has three games remaining, and two will be against Top 20 programs, Salisbury Saturday and Wesley (currently ranked 14th) in the season finale on November 16th. Between those contests, the Captains will host Rowan next Saturday, November 9th, for Senior Day at TowneBank Stadium. All three remaining games will kick off at 1:00 p.m.

Saturday's action from Salisbury will be broadcast live on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM) with the pre-game show beginning at 12:30 p.m.
