Six Captains Score in 10-0 Rout Over Southern Virginia for No. 3 Christopher Newport Women's Soccer

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- In an impressive display of offensive firepower, the third-ranked Christopher Newport women's soccer team scored 10 goals in Capital Athletic Conference play on Wednesday night, downing Southern Virginia University, 10-0. The Captains fell just shy of 50 shots, putting 24 on frame, as six different players found the back of the net in the game.

With the comfortable victory, the Captains improved to 9-0-2 overall with a 2-0-0 start to conference play. The win was a milestone victory for head coach Dan Weiler as the Captains' guide picked up his 250th career win. Combining his career as the head coach at Concordia College for 11 seasons and his seven seasons at Christopher Newport, Weiler is now 250-77-35 over the course of his career for a winning percentage of 74%. He ranks in the top-20 amongst active Division III coaches in winning percentage, and the top-50 in total victories.

Weiler has guided his program to 11 of the last 13 NCAA Tournaments including five of the first six seasons with the Captains. The three-time Capital Athletic Conference Coach of the Year is the all-time leader in conference history winning percentage and ranks sixth all-time in career victories.

The historic victory would come in convincing fashion on a beautiful Wednesday night at Captains Field. Christopher Newport would score four times in the first half and added six more goals in the second half to run away with the conference win.

Riley Cook headlined a group of four players to score two goals in the game as Abby Harrigan, Madison Cochran, and Jessica Zimmermann joined her. Cook notched the game-winning goal and added an assist in just 36 minutes of action. Cochran also had a five-point performance with 2 goals and an assist in her 32 minutes of play.

The first goal of the game would hold up as Cook's 22nd career game-winning goal and has now logged at least one goal in six straight games. After the ball was shuffled around in the box by players from both teams, it squirted out to the foot of Ryanne Davidson. Davidson poked a pass to Cook near the top of the box and the junior scoring leader blazed a line-drive into the left side of the goal. The goal came in the ninth minute of action.

Just over six minutes later, it was Cook setting up the second goal of the game with another blistering shot off her right foot. The Southern Virginia goalkeeper, Savannah Uri, made a highlight-reel diving save to stop Cook's first offering but the ball would trickle right to the foot of Christopher Newport rookie Jessica Zimmermann for the easy put away. The assist was Cook's second of the season and Zimmermann logged her second career goal.

After taking a 2-0 lead, the Captains offense slowed for the bulk of the first half as the Knights defense did a good job drawing the home team offsides and Uri managed a couple of saves. The defense would not hold, though, as the Captains broke through with two more in the final five minutes of the opening stanza.

First, a nice combination play was started at the top of the box by senior defender Keiley McCarthy. She sent a pass toward the goal line for junior Maxine Borris, who raced to get to the ball first and send a cross over the middle. Her line drive ball was hammered home by Madison Cochran for the first of her two goals on a beautiful one-timer. Minutes later, Cochran tacked on an assist with a wicked move on her defender down the left side to free her up for a clean pass to the middle for Abby Harrigan. Harrigan paid off the hard work with a touch shot into the high netting on the left side, picking up her first goal of the season.

The Captains carried a 4-0 lead into the break while outshooting the Knights, 26-2. Both of Southern Virginia's attempts were on-frame, but junior goalkeeper Haley Eiser made the stops without trouble.

In the second half, the floodgates opened with a four-goal series in just over five minutes of action. Cook kicked things off with her second goal of the night, 15th of the season, in the 53rd minute of play. She scored the unassisted tally off a rebound of her own shot after a nice play by Carson Pokorny opened her up for the shot with a blocked attempt of her own. Goal number six was also unassisted as Abby Harrigan took advantage of a short goalkick by the SVU keeper. The clearance was corraled by the sophomore and she quickly raced toward the top of the box before smashing a hard shot into the right side of the goal.

Less than a minute later, Zimmermann would tack on her second goal of the night on another nice pass from sophomore Emily Talotta. The second-year transfer leads the Captains in assists this season with six after helping on Zimmermann's third goal of the season. The score came on a one-touch shot after Talotta beat her defender down the left side for a cross to the middle of the box.

The next two goals would come unassisted as Molly Beegle buried a shot from a tough angle near the goal line and Madison Cochran capped her exceptional performance with her second goal of the night. In the 69th minute when she received a pass from Jill McDonald and then went to work. Cochran broke through four Knight defenders before a left-footed shot into the right side of the goal completed her five-point performance.

The team would explode in celebration for the 10th and final goal when junior defender Montana Coward registered her first career score. Rookie Sarah Rhiel placed a perfect cross into the box off a corner kick and Coward elevated over her defender to slam home a header into the left side of the goal. Coward picked up her first career goal in her 22nd appearance.

Overall, Christopher Newport put 49 shots on the board, ranking as the fourth most in program history. Maddy Belanger came on in relief as the second goalkeeper, playing 37:35 of the team shutout with Eiser, without facing a shot. The Captains held Southern Virginia to just one attempt in the second half and it sailed high and wide.

With the loss, Southern Virginia fell to 2-8-1 overall, 0-2-0 in CAC action.

Christopher Newport will return to action at home this Saturday, October 5 against Mary Washington. The game will serve as Senior Night for the Captains, with kickoff scheduled for 5:00 pm.
