NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Christopher Newport football squad heads to the Garden State for the second time this season on Saturday. The Captains, 1-4 overall and 1-1 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference, take on the Red Hawks of Montclair State University (2-3, 1-1) in a 2:00 p.m. start at Sprague Field on the MSU campus.
Art Link's Captains are coming off their first win of the season last Saturday, a 34-10 home victory over William Paterson University at TowneBank Stadium. The 24-point triumph snapped a four-game losing streak to open the season, and marked the debut of freshman quarterback
Xander Jedlick. The Virginia Beach product threw two touchdown passes and was 13 of 81 passing for 181 yards. For his efforts, Jedlick was selected the NJAC's Offensive Rookie of the Week.
Christopher Newport's defense also rose to the occasion last week, holding the Pioneers to just ten points. Junior defensive back
Jake Herzog intercepted two WPU passes, and returned his second pick of the day 35 yards for a Captains touchdown.Â
Montclair State is coming off a 10-7 victory at the College of New Jersey last Saturday. The Red Hawks scored their only touchdown of the day in the final quarter to edge the Lions and snap a two-game losing skid. MSU was selected third in the NJAC's pre-season poll of coaches after posting an 8-2 record last season. Rick Giancola is in his 37th year leading the Red Hawks, and will be going for his 250th career victory on Saturday.
This will be the fifth meeting of the schools, with the series even at 2-2. Last year, the Red Hawks slipped past the Captains in overtime, 17-14, at TowneBank Stadium. Two years ago in Montclair, Christopher Newport held off MSU in a 16-8 decision.
The game will be broadcast live on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM) with the pre-game show beginning at 1:30 p.m. The broadcast will also be available at cnusports.com/watch.Â
