NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Trailing 14-2 after nearly six minutes of action, head coach
Bill Broderick called for a timeout and the nationally-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team responded in staggering fashion, outscoring St. Mary's College of Maryland (4-10, 0-3), 44-5. over the next ten minutes of play. The impressive run powered the Captains to a bounce-back victory, 103-59, as the Captains improved to 11-3 overall and 2-1 in conference play.
Rookie
Jessica Foster was at the forefront of the offensive outburst, scoring a career-high 27 points to lead all players. Foster knocked down nine three-pointers, becoming just the second player in the history of the program, with CNU Athletics Hall of Famer Chelsie Schweers, to hit as many triples in a game. Foster's nine makes from beyond the arc tied the facility record set by Schweers against Greensboro on January 24, 2010. It also ranks second in 3-pointers made by a freshman and third overall.
The freshman guard was joined by classmates
Sondra Fan, with 19 points, and
Natalie Terwilliger, with 17 points and 12 rebounds, to lead the well-balanced attack on Wednesday night. Senior
Jessica Daguilh also finished in double figures, with 14 points, on 7-of-9 shooting.
Playing with a roster of just ten in the Capital Athletic Conference matchup, the Captains started three freshmen, a sophomore and Daguilh, the lone senior active for the contest. After the early struggles, the young roster recovered and put together one of the finest overall performances of the season for CNU. As a team, Christopher Newport shot 50% from the floor (36-72) and over 46% from beyond the arc (12-26). The 12 made triples, bolstered by Foster's breakout performance, are tied for the fifth most in a game in program history.
In the first quarter, St. Mary's was led by Gina Seifert in the early run to take a 14-2 lead. Seifert had six points and an assist as the visitors opened the game on a hot streak. Out of Broderick's 30-second timeout, however, the Captains' defensive intensity elevated and St. Mary's turned the ball over on five straight possessions without getting a shot off. Foster hit her first two treys while
Julia Ng had one and
Bailey Hodges had two steals in the quick spurt that saw CNU score 14 straight points to take the lead before St. Mary's could even manage a field-goal attempt.
The tormenting defense kept at it for the remainder of the first quarter, getting three more turnovers and holding the Seahawks without a point for the final 4:22 of clock. In the second quarter, Terwilliger, Fan, and Foster buried one each from beyond the arc in the first three minutes of the period to get CNU out to a near-20 point lead. The big run continued to the 4:53 mark, spanning nearly 10 minutes of game time as the Captains outscored their opponents, 44-5. In the final stages of the second quarter, the Seahawks managed five more points, but CNU carried a 34-point lead into the locker room, 58-24.
Fan led the way in the first half with 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting including a pair of three-pointers. Hodges had a sensational performance distributing the ball, with five assists in the second quarter alone.
With a big lead in hand, the Captains came out of the locker room with equal defensive pressure and added to their advantage. By the end of the third quarter, CNU led by 42 points, at 84-42. In the fourth, Foster heated up again and finished 4-for-5 in the final stanza to post the historical performance. Her last long-range shot came with less than a minute to go for the final bucket of the night, giving CNU 103 total points.
The Captains reached the century mark for the third time this season when they finished with 103 points against the Seahawks. It is the first time since the 1996-97 season that CNU women's basketball has recorded three or more games with 100 point scored in a year.
In addition to Foster's performance, the Captains registered 26 assists in the game, led by a career-high eight from sophomore
Bailey Hodges. She added four steals, as one of four Captains with as many thefts in the game. Terwilliger swatted five shots for a career-high in blocks while picking up her fifth double-double of the season.
Jazmyne Scott led the Seahawks with 16 points on 7-of-14 shooting, while Seifert finished with 14 points and four rebounds. The CNU defense held St. Mary's (Md.) to just 37.1% shooting and outrebounded their conference foe by a final tally of 51-40.
The Captains will now travel to Frostburg State University on Saturday, January 12 as they take on the Bobcats at 1:00 pm.
