Captains Begin Second Half of CAC Schedule With Saturday Hoops Doubleheader at York (Pa.)

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport travels to the Keystone State for a Saturday basketball doubleheader at York College of Pennsylvania. The games at Charles Wolf Gymnasium will begin the second half of the Capital Athletic Conference seasons for the CNU men and women.

Saturday's women's game will begin at 1:00 p.m. followed by the men's game at approximately 3:00 p.m. The games will be streamed live on CNUsports.com/watch with live stats of the action also available. The men's game will be broadcast live on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network with the pre-game starting at 2:40 p.m.

Both CNU squads are coming off victories on Wednesday night at home over Salisbury. The women registered an 80-58 win, while the men held off the Sea Gulls, 67-64.

The Christopher Newport women's squad improved to 14-4 overall and 5-2 in the CAC. Four starters finished in double figures as the Captains' high-powered offense scored at least 80 points for the ninth time this season. Senior Jessica Daguilh led the Captains with 15 points and seven rebounds on 6-of-9 shooting from the field. Three more starters finished in double figures as Kiana Kirkland had 13 points, Jessica Foster added 11 and Sondra Fan poured in 10. CNU starters accounted for 54 of the Captains' 80-point effort. 

The Captains will take on a York squad that is 8-10 overall and 3-4 in conference action. The Spartans are coming off a 71-61 home victory Wednesday night over Frostburg State. The York women have won their last two and three of their last four. Earlier this season at the Freeman Center on January 2nd, the Captains defeated the Spartans, 76-52, to open CAC play. CNU now holds a 12-6 advantage in the all-time series.

On the men's side, the Captains remain tied atop the CAC standings with Mary Washington at 6-1 heading into the weekend. CNU, ranked 15th in the nation, has won five in a row and the Captains are 16-2 overall. Senior Marcus Carter led the way with 20 points, and sophomore Jason Aigner also reached double figures with 15. The back-and-forth affair featured 11 lead changes and was tied three times. Christopher Newport was able to hang on despite shooting just 39 percent from the field for the game (24 of 62) and just 46 percent at the foul line (ten of 22).

CNU and York went down to the wire on January 2nd at the Freeman Center in the first meeting this season. The Captains came from behind to record a 73-71 triumph, and CNU now has an 11-3 lead in the all-time series with the Spartans, who are 12-6 overall and 5-2 in league play. York defeated Frostburg State on Wednesday, 87-75, and the Spartans have won five of their last six heading into Saturday's contest vs. CNU.

Following Saturday's twin bill in Pennsylvania, CNU's squads will travel to Maryland next Wednesday to take on St. Mary's College.
