Christopher Newport Entertains Salisbury in Wednesday Basketball Doubleheader

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport and Salisbury tangle on Wednesday night at the Freeman Center in a key Capital Athletic Conference basketball doubleheader. The women's game tips off at 5:30 p.m. followed by the men's game at approximately 7:30 p.m.

Both CNU squads are coming off convincing 89-61 victories on Saturday over Penn State Harrisburg at the Freeman Center. Bill Broderick's women's squad is now 13-4 overall and 4-2 in the CAC, while John Krikorian's men's team has won four straight and is 15-2 overall and 5-1 in league play.

The CNU men are tied with Mary Washington atop the CAC standings and have moved into 15th in the weekly national poll from D3hoops.com. Junior Savonte Chappell has led the squad over the four-game winning streak by averaging 17 points per game, and topped the Captains with 22 points Saturday vs. the Lions. Senior Marcus Carter continues his consistent play, and is averaging a team-best 16 points and seven rebounds for the season. Carter is presently ninth on CNU's all-time scoring list, just 33 points behind Davon Barton for eighth place.

Salisbury's men's squad has struggled recently, dropping its last two games, but the Sea Gulls are still 13-4 on the year and 3-3 in CAC play. The Gulls lost at home on Saturday to Frostburg State, 97-86. CNU has dominated the series of late, winning seven of the last eight, including CAC Championship games in 2016 and 2017. It will be the 43rd all-time meeting of the schools, with the Captains holding a 27-15 overall edge.

The Christopher Newport women had their hot shooting return on Saturday, as the Captains knocked down over 50% of their attempts for the third time in the last four games en route to their 28-point triumph over Penn State Harrisburg. The strong shooting performance was led by rookies Jessica Foster and Natalie Terwilliger, who each knocked down 6-of-11 attempts from the field. Foster buried three triples and led all scorers with 19 points while Terwilliger was one of three Captains in double figures with 13 points. Sondra Fan rounded out the freshmen trio in double figures by scoring 12 points. With her three made baskets from beyond the arc, Foster now has 45 in her first 17 games, surpassing Chelsie Schweers' program mark for the most three-pointers in the same stretch to start a career (42).

The Salisbury women's squad enters play on Wednesday with a 12-5 overall record and a 4-2 mark in the CAC. The Sea Gulls fell to Frostburg State on Saturday, creating a three-way tie for second between CNU, FSU, and Salisbury at 4-2 in the league standings. Southern Virginia leads the league with a 6-0 conference mark.

The women's squads will be meeting for the 31st time, with the Captains holding a 20-10 lead in the series. CNU has won the last five.

Tickets for the twin bill will be available Wednesday at the Freeman Center Ticket Office. The action will also be streamed live on CNUsports.com/watch with live stats also available. The men's game will be broadcast live on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM) with the pre-game starting at approximately 7:10 p.m.
