Nationally-Ranked Captains Host Penn State-Harrisburg in Saturday Basketball Doubleheader

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport hosts Penn State-Harrisburg Saturday in a Capital Athletic Conference basketball doubleheader at the Freeman Center. The women's game tips off at 2:00 p.m. followed by the men's action at approximately 4:00 p.m.

In the opener, the CNU women will look to bounce back from a road loss on Wednesday night at Southern Virginia, 58-54. The Captains are 12-4 overall and 3-2 in conference play, and ranked 16th in the country by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and 25th by D3hoops.com.

Freshman Julia Ng led the Captains Wednesday with her first career double-double, scoring 14 points and grabbing a career-high 10 rebounds in the loss. She added five steals in 34 minutes of action but was the only CNU player in double figures in the contest. A poor shooting performance plagued the Captains in the loss, as CNU was held to just 25.4% shooting (17-67) from the field including a 13% effort from beyond the arc (3-23). Despite the struggles from the field, CNU held the advantage for most of the game, jumping out to an eight-point lead in the first quarter and extending it to as many as 14 later in the opening half. SVU surged ahead thanks to a 20-11 fourth quarter to record the victory.

The Penn State-Harrisburg women's squad is 7-9 overall and 1-4 in the CAC entering Saturday's play. The Lions are coming off a 74-57 loss at Frostburg State on Wednesday night. CNU owns a 10-0 record all-time vs. the Lions.

On the men's side, the Captains are ranked 18th in the country by D3hoops.com and are 14-2 overall and 4-1 in the CAC. John Krikorian's squad has won three straight games, most recently a 77-54 decision Wednesday night at Southern Virginia University. The Captains have been led this season by senior Marcus Carter, who is averaging 16.1 points and 7.0 rebounds per game. Carter has moved into ninth place on the school's all-time scoring list, and is 47 points behind Davon Barton for the eighth spot.

Christopher Newport's defense has been outstanding, and the Captains remain second in the country in field goal percentage defense, allowing opponents to shoot just 35.2 percent from the field so far this season. CNU has also out-rebounded its opponent in all 14 victories this season.

The Lions of Penn State-Harrisburg will come to the Freeman Center with a mark of 10-6 overall and 2-3 in league action following a 98-73 triumph Wednesday night at Frostburg State. The men's matchup will be the 11th all-time, and CNU has won nine of the first ten.

Tickets for the doubleheader will be available at the Freeman Center ticket office Saturday prior to both games of the twin bill. All the action will also be streamed live on CNUsports.com/watch, with live stats also available. The men's game will be broadcast live on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM) with the pre-game show beginning at 3:40 p.m.
