Captains Men's Soccer Headed to Lynchburg Shellenberger Classic for Two Games This Weekend

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Riding a three-game winning streak to start the season, the Christopher Newport men's soccer team hits the road this weekend for a pair of non-conference games against the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, playing against Roanoke College and host Lynchburg at the 2018 Shellenberger Classic. First, CNU will take on the Maroons at 5:00 pm on Friday before facing the University of Lynchburg at 7:30 pm on Saturday night.

CNU opened the year with a dominant performance at the Joe Pombriant / CNU Soccer Classic, scoring 12 goals in two games. Then, the team went on the road and captured a come-from-behind 3-2 victory at N.C. Wesleyan College. The potent offense has led CNU to a 3-0-0 start for the fourth straight season.

Roanoke is also unbeaten in the early portion of the schedule, opening with a 2-0 record at their home tournament last weekend. The Maroons defeated Oberlin, 1-0, and Averett, 2-0, at the All Sports Cafe / Roanoke Invitational. Lynchburg is also 2-0 with wins over the same teams, having played as the fourth team in that tournament. The Hornets captured a 1-0 win over Averett and 4-0 victory against Oberlin.

CNU is facing Roanoke for the first time since 2013 and owns a 10-4-1 all-time lead in the series. Against Lynchburg, the Captains are knotted up all-time, with an 8-8-5 mark after the Hornets won a 2-1 decision in their last meeting in 2016.

The Captains' offense ranks 10th nationally after scoring the fourth most points through the first week and a half. Leading the way is senior Stephen Durbin with nine points on three goals and three assists, while defender Derek Cook has added three goals, including one game-winner.

Live stats and video will be available for both games, with links found on the men's soccer schedule at CNUsports.com.
