No. 17 CNU Women's Soccer Takes Down Dickinson, 3-1, in Non-Conference Action

CARLISLE, Pa. -- Sophomore Riley Cook scored a goal and added an assist to lead the way as the 17th-ranked Christopher Newport women's soccer team improved to 3-0-0 on Wednesday afternoon with a victory at Dickinson College, 3-1.

The Captains defense held the Red Devils to just one goal on four shots after the home team came in averaging 5.5 goals per game. On the other end of the field, the CNU offense continued it's hot start to the season with another three-goal effort.

CNU scored the first goal of the match on one of the only shots of the first half, when sophomore Maddie Cochran connected off Cook's helper in the 23rd minute. Carson Pokorny started the play with a corner kick played to Cook's feet, where she turned on a defender and slipped a pass across to Cochran for the finish. The two second-year forwards put the Captains on the board, 1-0.

In the second half, the Captains got an important goal in the 55th minute on an own goal scored by the Dickinson defense. Senior midfielder Gabby Gillis received the ball in the circle at half field and started to make her way down the field. She took on multiple defenders as she entered the box, and took an angle toward the corner. After spinning back against a pair of Red Devils, she crossed the ball into the center of the box, where a Dickinson defender, attempting to clear, mis-hit the ball back into the net.

That tally would hold up as the game-winning goal but the Captains would tack on an insurance score in the 66th minute. After defending a corner kick, the ball found Gillis streaking down the center of the field on a counter-attack. She sent a beautiful ball over the defense down the left side for the attacking forward, who touched the ball past the keeper and was fouled in the box, earning a penalty kick. Riley Cook stepped in and hammered home the attempt to give the Captains a 3-0 lead.

Dickinson avoided the shutout with a single goal in the 74th minute when Elizabeth Krause converted on one of only four shots by the DC offense. CNU keeper Haley Eiser was otherwise untested as the Captains' defense of Shaye Doherty, Lulu Manley, and Keiley McCarthy thwarted all of the Dickinson attempts.

CNU nearly converted twice more late in the game when Gillis and Carson Pokorny each tested the Dickinson keeper, Mary Katherine Brosn, but the Red Devils netminder made a pair of strong saves to hold the score at 3-1.

The Captains improved to 3-0-0 while Dickinson fell to 2-1-0 on the season. CNU will return to action with their home opener this weekend, taking on No. 6 Johns Hopkins University on Sunday, September 9 at 2:00 pm.
