Captains Look to Bounce Back...CNU Travels to New Jersey for Saturday Battle at Rowan

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport tasted defeat for the first time in 2018 last Saturday in an overtime loss at home to Montclair State. Now the Captains, 2-1 overall and 1-1 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference, will look to rebound on the road as they travel to Glassboro, New Jersey, to take on Rowan University (3-1, 2-1). Kickoff is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. Saturday at Coach Richard Wackar Stadium.

CNU had its way with Rowan a year ago, winning by a 30-0 score at POMOCO Stadium. The Profs, however, lead the all-time series with the Captains, 7-2.

"We're going to have to play much better this week to be successful against Rowan," Head Coach Art Link said. "I like the way we've bounced back in practice this week...I think our guys are ready and have put last week behind them."

Rowan won its first three games of the season before dropping a 34-7 decision last week at Frostburg State. The Profs have a balanced attack, averaging 150 yards per game rushing and 160 passing per game.

Christopher Newport's defense has excelled through the first three contests, especially against the run. CNU is currently ninth in the country in rushing defense, allowing just 40.7 yards per game on the ground. The Captains have also recorded 11 sacks. Sophomore linebacker Kaden Woodward leads the defense with 16 tackles and also has 2.5 sacks to his credit. Senior lineman Julien Spence has 15 stops and a team-high 3.5 sacks so far this year.

On offense, junior quarterback Jack Anderson has completed 57 percent of his passes and is averaging 244 yards per game through the air. He has tossed for five scores and has thrown three interceptions. CNU's ground game has shown steady improvement, and the Captains are led by sophomore Hunter Rogers who is averaging 53 yards per game and 3.5 yards per carry. Senior Joshua Davis has made a team-high 16 catches for 89 yards per game receiving, while sophomore Garrison Mayo has made 15 grabs, including three for scores.

Saturday evening's matchup will be the first of three trips to the Garden State this year for the Captains, who will later play games at William Paterson (October 20th) and the College of New Jersey (November 3rd). The game will be broadcast on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM) with the pre-game show beginning at 5:30 p.m.
