Football Hosts Montclair State in Saturday Matinee at POMOCO Stadium

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport's football team heads back into action on Saturday, as the Captains host the Red Hawks of Montclair State University. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at POMOCO Stadium for the New Jersey Athletic Conference battle.

The Captains are 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the NJAC and had an unexpected week off last week due to Hurricane Florence. CNU's game scheduled at Frostburg State was canceled and now the squad will look to return to the field and pick up where they left off two weeks ago. Christopher Newport defeated Hampden-Sydney, 17-13, on the road on September 8th.

"We've had some really good practices this week after coming back to campus," Head Coach Art Link said. "We made the best of the situation with the week off and I think we're ready for Montclair State."

The Captains have been led in their two wins by junior quarterback Jack Anderson, who was named the NJAC's Offensive Player of the Week following CNU's win at Hampden-Sydney. Anderson is 45 of 75 (60 percent) for 553 yards and five touchdowns so far, and has thrown just one interception. On defense, Christopher Newport has allowed just 22 total points, and the Captains have recorded ten sacks. Sophomore linebacker Kaden Woodward tops the squad with 11 tackles.

Montclair State also is 2-0 to start the season, and the Red Hawks are also 1-0 in the NJAC. Last week, MSU defeated Southern Virginia, 24-3, after opening the year with a 37-14 triumph over Salve Regina. Both victories came at Sprague Field in Montclair, and the Hawks now will make their first road trip of the season to take on the Captains.

The Captains traveled to New Jersey last year and came away with a 16-8 victory over the Red Hawks. CNU has a 2-1 edge in the all-time series with Montclair State, and the squads went to double overtime two years ago at POMOCO Stadium in a battle that saw the Captains pull out, 28-21. Rick Giancola, the Dean of NJAC Coaches, is in his 36th season leading the Montclair State program, and has compiled an all-time record of 241-121-2.

Saturday's contest will feature a halftime Academic Recognition Ceremony honoring approximately 375 CNU student-athletes who have excelled in the classroom as well as on the playing fields. Tailgate lots will open at 9:00 a.m. Saturday and tickets will be on sale Saturday morning beginning at 11:00 a.m. at POMOCO Stadium. Gates will open at 12:00 p.m.
