LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Christopher Newport men's soccer team will be back in action after a ten day layoff on Wednesday afternoon, traveling to Washington & Lee University for a 5:00 pm kickoff against the Generals. The Captains (3-2-0) will face the Generals (1-3-0) who have also been off for over a week due to the effects of Hurricane Florence. 

Christopher Newport last played in the Shellenberger Classic hosted by the University of Lynchburg on September 7-8, where the Captains suffered a pair of tough one-goal losses to ODAC teams. Their next two games, against Randolph College and Oglethorpe University, were postponed leading into Wednesday's return to action. 

Prior to the two setbacks in Lynchburg, the Captains had opened the season with a strong 3-0 start, averaging 5.0 goals per game in the win streak. The offense is still averaging 3.20 goals per game and peppering opposing goalkeepers with an average of 7.0 shots on goal.

Leading the offense has been Stephen Durbin, with three goals and three assists for nine points. Defender Derek Cook, who was named to the Shellenberger Classic All-Tournament Team, is tied for second on the team with six points on three goals, including one winner. Jordan Boone is the other Captain with six points, chipping in a pair of goals and assists. 

The two programs have only met four times, with an even 2-2 split in the previous matchups. Last season was the first time the two teams had played since the 2000 season and the Generals captured a 2-1 decision over the Captains in the first weekend of play. 

This season, Washington & Lee has suffered a pair of overtime losses as part of their docket, and the talented program has scored eight goals in four games. A lineup laden with veterans, the Generals are led by seniors Kevin Lencioni and Tyler Runge, each with five points.
